Marie Dorothy Hackmann Obituary

Marie Dorothy Hackmann, age 101, of Chamois, Missouri, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at StoneBridge Westphalia, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 7, 1921 in Chamois; the only child of the late William “Bill” and Mamie (Boss) Schollmeyer. On February 3, 1942, she was united in marriage to Alfred Joseph Hackmann at Assumption Catholic Church in Morrison, Missouri.

Marie attended school in Morrison through the 8th grade. She worked at a garment factory in Chamois until 1947. Marie took great pride in raising her four children and taking care of her home. In her younger years, she enjoyed gardening and farm work at her home. She also loved dancing and went out with her friends nearly every weekend to attended dances. Polka dancing was her favorite, whether she attended or watched them on television. When her children were young, she was often with them in the yard hitting pop flies, grounders, and playing catch.

Marie was a crafty and creative woman; she especially enjoyed ceramic crafts, crocheting, quilting and woodworking. Her family would say that she stretched the word “carpenter” as far as she could. Marie loved shopping, mostly for clothing or at hardware stores. Those who know her know her most favorite color was purple. Marie enjoyed an occasional beer, ice cream, and the St. Louis Cardinals. Most of all, Marie loved her family fiercely and will be dearly missed by those who know and love her.

She is survived by her children, Dale (Lana) Hackmann, Donna (Richard) Backes, Sherry (Ken) Backes, and Betty (Conn) Roden; 13 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren (with one on the way). She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred, on January 3, 1972.

Friends will be received on Saturday, April 29, 2023 from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Chamois. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. David Means officiating. Marie will be laid to rest next to her husband at Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Morrison, Missouri.

Expressions of sympathy can be made to Assumption Catholic Cemetery or the American Cancer Society.
