Shirley Ann Montgomery Obituary

Shirley A. Montgomery, 89, passed away peacefully at her home on April 14, 2023. She was born on February 17, 1934, to the late Cora and Archibald McCuin.

Shirley graduated from Peoples Academy, class of 1951, where she met the love of her life, Dale. They were married on June 25, 1955, and spent 57 years together before Dale passed away in 2012. After high school, Shirley attended school for dental assisting. She worked in a local Burlington office while Dale attended Norwich University. After years of being a stay-at-home mom, caretaker to all and domestic queen she went back to work in dad’s office until they retired.

Shirley and Dale had so much fun together and truly enjoyed each other’s company. They had an exceptional marriage. They traveled through much of Europe while Dad was stationed in Germany. Lots of adventures were taken in their RVs, traveling throughout the US and Canada.

Many hours were spent working together, golfing, camping, traveling, and playing cribbage every night before dinner while they had their martinis. Dad’s famous line to mom was “Here, Here Bubsie – Can a guy get a drink around here.” While the kids got on mom’s case about always making dad’s drinks she said, “He brings me juice in bed every morning and makes the coffee.” We never said another word on the subject.

As the children got older, they realized why Shirley was often grumpy. She did most of the work and dad had most of the fun! Shirley was always willing to go along for the ride. He was always gathering his kids and grandkids around, but Shirley always did the cooking and cleaning after large family gatherings. They were blessed to have all those times together.

Shirley is survived by her children Jeff (Mary), Holly K. (Peter), Beth, and David (Rita); her grandchildren Holly E. (Andrew), Katy (Nick), Justin (Karen), Ellie (Alex), Nick (Sarah), Megan, Kassy (Charlie), Thomas (Katie Jane), Darian, and Lauren. Also surviving are her great grandchildren Levi, Holly D., Cooper, Norah, Wyatt, Isaac, Jonah, Quinn, Nolan, Madison, and Thomas whom she adored. Shirley also leaves behind her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Holly (Johnny) and brother Billy (Mary).

There will be no calling hours. The family will gather to celebrate Shirley’s life at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Williston Rescue or C.I.D.E.R.
