Ruth Durbin Obituary

Ruth Durbin, 105, of Effingham, formerly of Brownstown, died at 1:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at Lakeland Health and Rehabilitation Center, Effingham.


A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at Forbis Cemetery, rural Brownstown with Pastor Brian Newswander officiating. Memorials may be made to Forbis Cemetery or the donor’s choice. Gieseking Funeral Home, Brownstown is assisting the family with arrangements.


Ruth was born on Wednesday, October 31, 1917 in Fillmore, IL to William C. and Rosa L. (Diveley) Rogers. She married Floyd L. Durbin on September 3, 1938 in Keokuk, Iowa and he preceded her in death on February 19, 2003. She was a member of Crossroots Church, Effingham.


Ruth was employed by the International Shoe Company in Hartford, Illinois for several years. She taught Sunday school class and was active in women's missionary work at the Alton Evangel Church in Alton Illinois. Her husband was an employee of Shell Oil Company and they lived in the Wood River, Illinois area for many years. Her husband and three brothers all served in the United States Navy during WWII. She was a member of the Effingham Assembly of God church currently Crossroots Church for many years. At age 105 Ruth lived by herself in an apartment in Effingham. She drove to church each Sunday until she was 102. Ruth was a remarkable woman who lived through two world wars, the great depression, the Spanish Flu and the Covid pandemic. She was very proud of the fact that she was probably the only person in the United States whose father was alive when Abraham Lincoln was president.


In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by, her parents, 3 brothers and a half sister.


She is survived by her Church family and her special friend Sandra Richardson of Effingham.
