Sylvia Steen Obituary

Sylvia Steen

March 20, 1942 - March 17, 2023

Beloved daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend.

Devoted mother to her many poodles and several cats.

Lover of music, art, and fashion.

Bold, creative, and intelligent.

Sylvia was born on March 20, 1942 to Howard Bayne Steen and Voncylle Zetella Steen. After graduating from the Florida State University with a degree in Medical Technology, she left for San Francisco where she spent several years enjoying the architecture, the view of the bay, and driving on the California hills in her MGB and Jeep.

After moving back to Jacksonville, Florida, she bought a Victorian home in Riverside, decorating the walls with her favorite artwork and planting California trees in her yard. She spent her spare time focusing on music, earning a music degree at the University of North Florida, attending concerts of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, and learning many instruments, including the piano, harpsichord, harp, flute, and bells. She was the proud owner of over 100 hats of all fashions and styles and a world traveler with trips to Thailand, Russia and Chile.

She was predeceased by her parents, Howard Bayne and Voncylle, and cousins Rob and Charles. She is survived by her brother Samuel, sister-in-law Darla, niece Julie, nephews Christopher (Heather) and Patrick, grand nephew Samuel, grand niece Nori, and cousins Edie, Sonny, Albert, Marjorie, Gerald, Diane, Harold, and Johnny.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, March 25 at 11am at Jacksonville Memory Gardens, 111 Blanding Blvd, Orange Park, FL 32073. As Sylvia was an admirer of hats, all attendees are invited to wear their most stylish hat to her service.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra which provided Sylvia with many hours of beautiful music. All are encouraged to share photos, condolences, and other remembrances of Sylvia on the Tribute Wall here.
