GENEVA – David G. Mulvey, 76, of Geneva, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2023 at Geneva General Hospital.

Friends may call at the DeVaney-Bennett Funeral Home, 181 N. Main St., Geneva on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Prayer services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at the funeral home and a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. in St. Stephen’s Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to St. Francis/St. Stephen’s School, 17 Elmwood Ave., Geneva, NY 14456 or to St. Francis/St. Clare Parish, 25 Center St., Waterloo, NY 13165, or to a charity of one’s choice.

David was born on August 28, 1946 in Geneva, the son of the late Leo J. and Beryl E. Murray Mulvey Jr. David attended St. Francis de Sales School and DeSales High School. He graduated from St. Andrew’s Seminary in 1964 and St. John Fisher College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1968. He did graduate studies at St. Bernard’s Seminary, Nazareth and Ithaca Colleges. He began his teaching career at Holy Rosary School in Rochester for 4 years and he treasured 31 years at St. Mary’s School in Waterloo. He retired with the closure of St. John Bosco School, in Seneca Falls, the 2 year result of the merger of St. Mary’s and St. Patrick’s in Seneca Falls. David’s commitment to his former students and Scouts was evidenced by the numbers who would return to visit, call or correspond thru their high school and college years, and into their adulthood.

A member of Geneva’s Our Lady of Peace Parish, he was a past Lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Francis de Sales and St. Stephen’s Churches. In 1974 he served as publicity chairman on the DeSales High School SOS Committee which succeeded in reversing the decision to close that school. David also was a past member and 2 term president of the St. Francis /St. Stephen’s School Board.

David has an extensive career in Scouting, joining at age of 11 and attained the rank of Eagle Scout at age of 13. He served on the staff of Camp Babcock–Hovey, attended the 50th Anniversary Jamboree in Colorado Springs, and went on to become an Ass’t Scoutmaster and eventually Scoutmaster of his alma mater Troop 1 of Geneva’s First Baptist Church, and as an interim Scoutmaster of Troop 71 of St. Mary’s in Waterloo, and 3 years Keseca District Scout Roundtable Commissioner. A highlight of his scouting experiences included nineteen 4-week cross country trips for 12 days of mountain wilderness backpacking at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico as Crew Advisor and Ass’t Expedition Coordinator for the Finger Lakes Council, BSA.

David was the recipient of the St. George Award from the Diocese of Rochester’s Catholic Committee on Scouting; the Silver Beaver Award from the National Council of the BSA for distinguished service to youth; a Certificate of Merit for meritorious action from the BSA’s National Court of Honor. He was also named Scouter of the Year in New York State by the American Legion in 1980.

He is survived by his sister, Beryl L. Teague of Geneva; his nieces and nephews, Bruce (Chantal) Teague, Tiffany (Tim) Cohrs, and Beth (Brian) Mabry; his great nieces and nephews, Beth, Leo and Teagen Cohrs, Hayden and Gavin Teague and Reed, Pierce, Isla, and Grant Mabry; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents and his brother-in-law Bruce R. Teague.
