Robert I Schwartz Carmel, New York Obituary

Robert I Schwartz

Robert I. “Bob” Schwartz, self-proclaimed and 30+ year “resident lunatic” of Lake Carmel, NY, passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at the age of 75.

Bob was born on May 3, 1947, in Bronx, New York to Joseph and Sarah Schwartz. He is preceded in death by his parents and 3 siblings (David Schwartz, Michele Mercado, and Karen Baez). Bob is survived by his wife, Maixa Doble-Schwartz, his son Andrew Schwartz (Christine Moore), stepson Erik Kadler, and former wife Jessie Schwartz. He cherished his role as Papa Bob/Abuelo to his 3 grandchildren, Alex, Erin, and Corey, and was a beloved father figure and favorite uncle to his niece Marci Dahms, nephew Christopher Baez, and their respective children.

Bob earned a bachelor’s degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and worked as a New York City police officer. He went on to have a successful business career in client relations after leaving the police department. Bob found his little slice of paradise in Lake Carmel in 1991 and absolutely loved his house on the lake. The community quickly became like family. He cared so much for the residents and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Lake Carmel Community Center for 20 years.

Bob was one of a kind. His mischievous sense of humor, kindness, and generosity was unmatched. Anyone Bob met instantly became his friend. He never went anywhere empty-handed, and he got so much joy from giving gifts and being of service to his community. He loved fishing, playing pranks and jokes, and decorating his house and yard for all the holidays, especially Halloween. He was easily recognized around town using one of his many hand-carved walking sticks which he was so proud of. He was an avid collector of stuff – tchotchkes, keychains, Disney characters, and above all, flashlights! And he could never buy just one of anything.

Everyone has at least one heartfelt, hilarious, or sometimes outrageous Bob story (and probably one of his flashlights or keychains too!). And as his long-time voicemail message reminded us, “Have a good day, a good evening, and a good whatever!” Bob will be sorely missed.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that you honor Bob’s memory by helping someone in need, paying it forward with a random act of kindness, or donating to your favorite charity. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held this summer in Lake Carmel. Details to come. Contact Andrew Schwartz at aschwartz7474@gmail.com with any questions or to be added to the invitation list.

Our office was moving from one location to another and there were two cats trapped behind the enclosed parking lot. I just couldn’t fathom leaving them trapped with no way to get out. I did not have a key to open the fence but Bob did. Bob did not hesitate in coming down... Continue Reading

Many years ago, when I found out that Bob hadn't had a Passover latke in a couple of decades, a beautiful tradition was born! It was so much fun making those latkes for him every year... especially since he was the one that always gave! He was so grateful, he didn't know... Continue Reading
