Mr. Allen Wendell Al Porter, 98, a resident of Hearthstone, the George H. Neal Memorial Retirement Home, Waynesboro died Thursday, November 30 at the Waynesboro Hospital attended by his sweetheart Mef Crowther. Born June 19, 1919 in Colfax, Iowa, he was the son of the late Ray R. and Lela Marie (Thompson) Porter. His wife of 56 years, Phyllis Richards Porter, preceded him in death on January 14, 2007. They were married in Washington, DC February 9, 1951. He was a 1937 graduate of Nevada, IA high school and the Capital Radio Engineering Institute, Washington DC. Prior to World War II he worked as a news photographer for the Nevada Evening Journal and later as an aerial photographer for the U. S. Department of Agriculture. He was a licensed pilot and aircraft owner for many years and enjoyed photography and flying. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He retired in 1981 after 34 years as a communication systems manager with the U. S. Army during which time he served at the Pentagon, Ft. Ritchie, MD and South Korea. Al was a long-time member of the Otterbein Church of Waynesboro where he had served as a member of the Board of Administration and as a Sunday school teacher. A Waynesboro resident since 1956, Al actively served his community over the years. He was a board member and president of the Franklin County Easter Seal Society; president and secretary of the Rotary Club of Waynesboro; board member and president of the Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library and a board member and treasurer of the George H. Neal Memorial Retirement Home. Al served the Borough of Waynesboro as a Councilman from 1996 to 2003 and from 2005 to 2009. He was an instructor and tax advisor in the AARP Tax-Aide program for over 20 years. Survivors include a sister, Donna Cooper of Wauwatosa, WI; daughter, Kathy Williams and husband Glenn of Apalachin, NY; sons, Ray Porter and wife Lisa of Weaverville, NC and David Porter and wife Kathleen of Frederick, MD; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
