Betty Jean Griffice Obituary

Betty Jean Carlin Griffice passed away peacefully on March 14, 2023 in Houston Texas. She was born in Galveston Texas on September 14, 1937. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved children, Infant daughter Carol Jean, David Henry “Davy”, Donnie and grandchild Laura Jean Griffice.

Betty always found the silver linings in the dark clouds throughout her extraordinary life, which is a testament to her strong Christian faith. Betty’s joyful demeanor would brighten everyone’s day and she will always be remembered by her infectious laugh and sweet smile.


Betty married the love of her life, David Griffice on June 3rd 1954 in Galveston Texas. She was a devoted military wife while David was serving in the U.S. Coast Guard for 20 years, living all across the country from the gulf coasts of Texas & Louisiana, to the Pacific Northwest & Alaska. After David’s retirement from the USCG, they relocated to the Panama Canal Zone where David worked as a pilot for 21 years. After David’s retirement, Betty settled in Hitchcock Texas to be close to her cherished family, and spent her time traveling the world and showering her grandchildren with love.


Betty is survived by her husband David, son Charles and his wife Julie, her beloved and devoted granddaughter’s Tara, Rebecca, Ashley Griffice and Chelsea Cochrane. Great grandchildren, Sophia Turnbow, Richard Lamer, Kingston Popp and Leighton Maurens. Brothers in law, Larry Griffice (Suzy) and Donald Hutchings. Sister Carolyn “Patsy” Jones and many nieces and nephews. Lifelong friends Anne Rose, Tooka and Randy Tinkle and Raquel Lamer.


Services will be held at Carnes Funeral Home 3100 Gulf Freeway in Texas City TX on Monday March 27th, 2023. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM with services commencing at 11:00 AM with Pastor Michael Selzer officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Betty’s memory to:
