William Francis Fitzgerald

<p>William Francis Fitzgerald (Bill) passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2023 in Houston, Texas at</p><p>the age of 100. He was born September 28, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York to parents Thomas Patrick Fitzgerald and Emma Schouw Sullivan. William will be forever remembered as a “gem of a man” and a wonderful person who loved his family dearly, and was adored by everyone who knew him.</p><p></p><p>Growing up within walking distance of Ebbets Field, and being from Brooklyn, Bill had a passion for the Brooklyn Dodgers. As an avid sports fan he also enjoyed the Mets, the Jets and the Brooklyn Nets; and of course he learned to love the hometown Astros.</p><p><br></p><p>He served proudly in the United States Army during WWII with the 224th Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion in New Guinea and the Philippines.</p><p><br></p><p>Being a veteran of WWII, he provided support for his favorite charity, the Wounded Warrior Foundation. In addition, his heart directed him to support the St. Jude Charitable Foundation. Bill was also a big supporter of the Harris County Senior Softball League.</p><p><br></p><p>Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Emma, beloved wife Opal, brother Joseph Fitzgerald (Teloir), sister Rita Hollands (George) and brother-in-law and friend Norman Ganslen.</p><p><br></p><p>Left behind to share his memories are his step-children, Jean Bevelo (Jimmy), George Tuten (Lourdes), William Tuten (Linda), Obie Tuten (Flo), Calvin Tuten (Robbie) and Dorothy “Dot” Klein; sister Doris Ganslen; nieces and nephews, Gregory Ganslen, Nora Jean Ganslen, Beth Ganslen, Joanne Hollinger (Drew), Dennis Fitzgerald, Karen Bingel, Kevin Fitzgerald (Gayle), Tom Hollands and Bill Hollands (Arlene); 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; many generations of nieces and nephews, plus a host of good friends.</p><p><br></p><p>The Celebration of Life service is planned for 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at the Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at the Woodlawn Garden of Memories Cemetery.</p><p><br></p><p>Following the graveside service, a reception will be held at Guadalajara Hacienda, 9799 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77024.</p><p><br></p><p>William Francis Fitzgerald will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.</p><p><br><br></p><p></p>
