Ruth S. McCarney Obituary

Ruth S. McCarney, 99, of Camp Hill, passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2023 in her residence with her loving family at her side.


She was a retired secretary with the former Reilly-Whiteman-Walton Company, an oil production company in Conshohocken, PA. Ruth was a meticulous homemaker who was totally devoted to her family and her church. She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Camp Hill where she served her congregation as a member of the Congregational Council, was past Chair of the Stewardship Board and was a lector and spokesperson for the World Hunger Appeal of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Ruth also served on several different committees of the Central PA Synod of the Lutheran Church in America which provided support for pastors’ spouses. Ruth enjoyed needlework, painted in oils and pastels, and along with her husband, was a world traveler.


Ruth was born in West Conshohocken, PA, the daughter of the late Monroe and Alma (Bartram) Sowers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter Elizabeth Jean “Libby” McCarney; a brother Monroe Sowers; four sisters, Anna Harple, Verna Kolva, Hellen Miller and Alma Todt-Horton; and her loving husband of more than 74 years, Rev. Dr. Howard J. McCarney.


She is survived by her daughters, Kathryn F. Foster of New Cumberland and Christine R. McCarney of Camp Hill; six grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.


A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, March 25, 2023 in Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1610 Carlisle Rd. Camp Hill, PA with the Rev. Evan Houck officiating. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to services Saturday in the church. Burial will be in Rolling Green Cemetery, Lower Allen Twp.
