Warren "Woody" Elwood Barlow II Obituary

Woody Barlow directed his last flight on March 10, 2023, from his Beaver Lake home, surrounded by family. Born Warren E. Barlow II on August 18, 1946 to Warren E. Barlow and Coletha Burks Barlow. Woody spent his growing up years in Olathe, Kansas.

Woody was a true Renaissance man. He challenged himself to meet lofty goals that would have seemed impossible to most. Perhaps his determination came from overcoming childhood polio. His sense of adventure, capabilities, and strong willpower were aspirational and inspirational, whether it was climbing Mt. Rainier, completing a marathon and triathlon, or directing planes as an Air Traffic Controller.

Woody was educated as an Engineering Draftsman before serving two years in Vietnam, receiving the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with device; Vietnam Service Medal with one Silver Star; Navy Unit Commendation; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Meritorious Unit Citation; and Combat Action Ribbon.

He served 31 years as an Air Traffic Controller and Operational Manager, covering seven states, for the FAA in Kansas City. It was when he was out with a fellow controller that he met his future wife, Lynne Katherine Morris. Together, Woody and Lynne shared a lifetime filled with fun punctuated by travel, art, two children, and volunteerism. Woody was known for his even temper and quiet unassuming nature, wanting the best for all in his circle. He made a mark on many people’s lives.

He was a multi-talented person who will be remembered for his kindness, compassion and strong sense of honor. He was a devoted husband of fifty years and a loving father to Lisa and Warren.

His love of literature is what inspired him to become an author. He spent several years perfecting his first attempt, Tarzan Wore Chaps, a memoir followed by three more books. His last book was a young adult novel set in Eureka Springs.

Woody and Lynne retired to Beaver Lake eighteen years ago where he committed himself to community service. He served as a board member for The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow; was president and board member, volunteer firefighter, and assistant fire chief for Grassy Knob Fire Association; and board member of the Carroll and Madison Public Library Foundation.

Woody was predeceased by his parents; brother, Thomas E. Barlow; and great-granddaughter, Alani Putnam. He is survived by his wife, Lynne; daughter, Lisa Barlow; son, Warren E. Barlow III; sister, JoAnn McKee; three grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and a very large extended family of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, and cats Minnie and Romeow. Woody leaves behind a bereaved family and a multitude of friends who will miss this honorable man.

A celebration of Woody’s life will be held later in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to The Woody Barlow Fellowship at The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow or the Grassy Knob Fire Department.
