<p>AIKEN, SC – Dirk Spanns passed away at home peacefully on Monday, March 13, 2023, at the age of 99.</p><p><br></p><p>Dirk was born November 10, 1923, in the Netherlands. From the early age of 13 he became a fisherman, and later a ship welder in Holland. He immigrated to the United States in 1957. He spent his entire working career with International Paper Company. He was a resident of New Jersey from 1958 until 2014. He had made the Cedar Creek community of Aiken, SC his home for the past nine years. Dirk was a member of The First Reformed of Boonton Church and later the Lafayette Federated Church in NJ. He was an avid gardener and had a love for flowers. He enjoyed being outside and owned a miniature farm. He loved nature, tinkering and building things.</p><p><br></p><p>In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Brechtje Spaans.</p><p><br></p><p>Survivors include his daughter, Cornelia McCorkle (John), Aiken, SC; two grandchildren, Shawn McCorkle (Michelle Cohen) and Timothy McCorkle (Kelly Cafone); and five great-grandchildren, Brodie, Ryder, Daisy, Miley, and Toby.</p><p><br></p><p>Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 20, 2023, in the Chapel of Millbrook Baptist Church, 223 South Aiken Blvd. SE, Aiken, SC 29803, with Pastors Bill Howard and Dexter Lambert officiating.
