Peter M. Russo Sr., 90, former resident of South Windsor and Cape Cod, Massachusetts, loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle & friend, passed away peacefully, on Thursday, March 9, 2023. Peter was born on April 20, 1932, in Hartford, one of 6 children of the late James A. and Anna (Mandziuk) Russo.


He was a veteran of the US. Army, proudly serving his country during the Korean War. Peter was honorably discharged in 1954, having earned the rank of Corporal and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars. Peter was employed as a truck driver with the family business, Russo Brothers of Hartford in the excavation field.


Peter was a member of the Hyannis Yacht Club and Moose Lodge during his residency at the Cape. He loved going to tag and estate sales. His favorite hobbies were camping, dancing, boating, fishing, volleyball, tennis, playing cards and going to Foxwoods. He was an avid fan of the UConn men and women’s basketball teams.


Peter is survived by his three loving children: Peter M. Russo Jr. and his wife Deborah of South Windsor, Cheryl A. Cormier and her husband David of Windsor Locks and Doreen J. Russo also of Windsor Locks. His three grandsons, of whom he was most proud: Carl Cormier, Kevin Cormier, and Tyler Russo, his sister Roseann Cary of South Windsor and numerous nieces, nephews, their families and many good friends. In addition to his parents, Peter was predeceased by his brothers Gennaro, Joseph, James and his sister, Anna. He also leaves a special friend Barbara Madaffari of Boca Raton Florida.


Calling hours will be on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, from 10-11 am with a service at 11 am at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road in South Windsor. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project.
