It is with heavy and saddened hearts that the family of the late Arthur Clarence King announce his passing on April 21, 2022, surrounded by his loving family at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre (CNRHC) in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL at the age of 83.

Clarence is pre-deceased by his parents, Frank and Daisy King; parents-in-law, Wesley and Kathleen Quinn; brother, Erastus King; and brothers-in-law, Hector Dorey, Garry Quinn, Brian Quinn, and Richard Joyce.

Left with fond and loving memories are his wife of 63 years, Mavis (nee Quinn); sons, Byron (Lorraine) and Barry (Kim); daughter, Mavis (Clyde) Braye; grandchildren, Ashlie (Matthew), Candace (Nathan), Robyn, Jazmine, Ryan (Danielle), and Emily (Chris); great-grandchildren, Kylie, Brody, Lilly, Teagan, Ava, and Baby King due later this year; sister, Verbena Dorey; sisters-in-law, Mina (Frank) Dobson, Inez (Bob) Piehl, and Colleen Quinn-Joyce; brother-in-law, Bobby (Janet) Quinn. As well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Clarence was born in Windsor, NL on July 30, 1938. He lived in Windsor up until joining the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1956, which brought him to Ontario where he met the love of his life, Mavis. They married on December 27, 1958. Together with their first baby boy, they returned to Newfoundland in 1961 to continue to grow and raise their family. He was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and great grandfather who loved his family unconditionally. His quick-wit and sense of humour will be dearly missed.

Clarence’s passion in life was his volunteer work with the Royal Canadian Legion, Windsor Branch 49. For his many years of service, he was awarded a Life Membership to the Legion. He served Branch 49 in various executive positions for decades, including several years as President. He also served in Provincial Command as Chairman and President as well as Dominion Command as Vice-Chairman and Vice-President. He received numerous awards over his volunteer career, including the Legion Meritorious Service Medal with Palm Leaf and Legionnaire of the Year. In addition to his volunteer work, he proudly served his community after being elected to Windsor Town Council from 1973 to 1985, serving as Mayor from 1974 to 1981.

Through the years, Clarence enjoyed a number of pastimes including watching hockey and baseball, hunting, woodworking, painting, winemaking, and pickling, among others. He also fulfilled his lifelong dream of writing and recording his own music.

The funeral service was held at the Salvation Army Park Street Citadel in Grand Falls-Windsor on Monday, April 25, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. Interment was held at the Salvation Army Park Street Citadel Cemetery (Caribou Road).

Pallbearers will be sons, Byron and Barry King; grandson, Ryan King; grandson-in-law, Chris Weir; and longtime family friends, John Knight and Gary Gosse. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Hoskins Funeral Homes.

The King family wishes to acknowledge with sincere appreciation the many expressions of love and kindness shown during this difficult time. A heartfelt thanks also goes out to Dr. Devin Philpott and CNRHC staff who went above and beyond to make his short stay comfortable.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Clarence's memory or as expressions of sympathy can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund or the Salvation Army Park Street Citadel Cemetery Fund.
