Dr. Gabriel was born in Mytilene, Greece and graduated from the Medical School of Athens. After a rotating internship at St. Mary’s Hospital, Hoboken, NJ, he completed his pediatrics residency at Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, NY, followed by a fellowship in pediatrics at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.
In 1966, he founded his independent pediatric practice in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. He married the love of his life, the late Dr. Stavroula Angelakos-Gabriel, and together they raised their three children in the same community he served. Devoted to his patients and their families, Dr. Gabriel not only made house calls, he also had his office phone connected to his home so that he would be available to his patients any time, day or night.
Gabriel Pediatrics became a leading practice in Bay Ridge. In 1990, The Medical Society of the State of New York presented him with a citation “in recognition of Fifty Years devoted to the service of the public in the practice of medicine” and he was listed in 2001 and 2003 in New York magazine’s “Top Doctor” in Pediatrics. In 2009, he was honored by the Greater New York Councils of the Boy Scouts of America “For Outstanding Community Service.” In 2011, The Greek-American newspaper, The National Herald featured his life story in its weekly edition magazine titled “The Poor Boy Who Became a Great Doctor and Example for the New Generation.” In 2011, 2012 and 2013, Gabriel Pediatrics was voted “Best of the Boro” by The Spectator and Home Reporter newspapers. He was a member of the Kings County Medical Society, NY State Medical Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and American Medical Association. On the recommendations of the late Archbishop Iakovos, of the Greek Orthodox Church, he was extended the honor of Archon of the Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle for his charitable work supporting the underprivileged, disabled, and Greek communities.
Even with his extensive professional accomplishments, Dr. Gabriel is best known for the relationships he formed and impacts he made on nearly everyone he touched. Dr. Gabriel delivered exceptional primary care to thousands of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults, seeing the whole child as opposed to treating just an illness. He was a mentor and an example to generations of pediatricians and nurses and other health professionals in world-class clinical care, diagnostics, and genuine engagement with the patient. It was this devotion, care, and compassion to his patients and their parents that enabled his practice to expand to Staten Island, as well as the addition of seven providers who continue to provide care to second and third generations of children.
