William Dawson Freuler, Sr


William (Bill) Dawson Freuler, Sr, 87, passed away February 3, 2023.


Bill is survived by his wife, Eudene Jones Freuler; their children Cindy Freuler Nicholson (Paul) of Sylva


NC, Angie Freuler Rush (Brian) of Wendell, NC and Dawson Freuler of Carolina Beach, NC. Bill is also

survived by his grandchildren Emily Nicholson of Waynesville, NC, Chris Nicholson of Nashville, TN, 

Jordan Rush of Fort Collins, Co and Aaron Rush of Wendell, NC; along with by many other family

members who he loved deeply.


Bill was proceeded in death by his parents, James (Pete) Dawson Freuler and Mary Green Cooper Freuler

of Halifax County; brother Thomas (Tom) Wayne Freuler of New Jersey. Bill was born and raised in Halifax County. After graduating from Weldon High School in 1953, Bill joined the US Army. Upon completing his time in the service, he returned to Halifax County and married Eudene, his wife of 67 years. Bill worked for Albemarle Paper Company for several years before deciding to further his education at North Carolina State University. Bill graduated from NCSU in 1962 with a degree in Pulp and Paper Science and returned to work with Albermarle Paper Company. Bill’s journey with the paper industry would take him and his family to Minnesota, Connecticut, Montana and back to North Carolina where he retired from Champion International Paper Company in Canton, NC in 1993.


After his retirement, Bill and Eudene moved back to Halifax County where they enjoyed their retirement years with family and friends. Bill is a member of Community Center Baptist Church. Bill loved to sing and was a member of the church choir. He also served on multiple committees as well as a deacon. Not only was he involved in his church, but he was also involved in a variety of civic and missionary activities.


Bill will be remembered by many as a man of many stories. He had a story for every occasion. His generosity knew no boundaries as he found joy in being able to help those who needed his assistance whether it be his knowledge, his labor or other means. 


A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 6, 2023 at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, with Dr. Julian Mills and Rev Jim Whitehead officiating.  


The family will receive friends after the service. 


In his spirit of generosity, in lieu of flowers, we suggest a donation be made to a charity of your choice.


A charity that was near and dear to his heart was the NC State Natural Resources Foundation.
