Obituary

Grant Beverley Gammie died peacefully on Dec 31, 2022 in his 101st year. Grant grew up on his family farm south of Elora. In the late 1940’s Grant met and married Evelyn Kaine, who was the love of his life. They were married for 73 years and raised 6 children on that same farm.

Grant was predeceased by his wife Evelyn and daughters Margaret and Jan Edissi and son-in law David Martin. Also predeceased by brother Robert Gammie and sisters Marian Fair and Mildred Witzel. Loving father of Elaine Martin of Milton, Ruth (Michael) of Dorset, Bill (Sherry) of Cambridge, Keith (Deb) of Markham, Ross (Kath) of Ariss, Brian Edissi son-in-law, of Kitchener. Cherished grandfather of Tara, Ryan, Alan, Megan, Brian, Ben, Elise, Drew, Devin, Mark, Kyla, Bruce, Dante, and Dario, and great-grandfather of 16. Grant also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Grant took pride in expanding and improving the farm. He challenged himself to plant straight rows, and didn’t like it when people referred to topsoil as ‘dirt’. Grant espoused the idea of life-long learning and took roles in various community organizations. He was a school board trustee in the 1960’s, worked on the Land Division Board for Wellington County from 1988 to 1994 and tried to encourage responsible, sustainable land-use planning where he could. Even at 100 years old he was following the stock markets, farm markets and weather reports, and was still concerned about timely planting and harvesting.

In the 1960’s, Grant decided that all of his children should see the east coast, and then the west coast of Canada and those long road trips were memorable. As a young man he soloed in a small airplane and later shared his flying interest with his children. He was affectionately known to his family as ‘GB’.

Grant was a member of the Rotary Club in Guelph for some 50 years and seemed to always be involved in fund raising and volunteering for their various projects. He and Evelyn enjoyed Scottish country dancing for many years. They really loved to travel and set foot on every continent except Antarctica. They enjoyed sunsets at their cottage at Sauble Beach for many, many years.

Our family thanks Dr.Westendorp for the compassion and care he gave Grant.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Lakeside Church (7654 Conservation Road, Guelph).
