November 22, 1938 - December 7, 2022

It is with deep sadness we announce the sudden passing of John Gregory at the age of 84. John is survived by his wife Carolyn, his children Todd, Boyd, and Sonya, his 4 grandchildren Cole, Jasmine, Jossilyn, Teyla and brother Dick Gregory.

Born in Webster City Iowa, John attended the University of Northern Iowa where he competed in multiple sports and was inducted into their Hall of Fame.

John was a football coach whose career spanned 40 plus years. He started his career at Iowa Central Community College and from there he moved to a position at South Dakota State University and held his 1st Head coaching position. His career would take him to UNI, and then to Canada where he coached in the CFL.   John coached with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Hamilton Tiger Cats winning championship Grey Cups, with the Bombers in 1984 and the Roughriders in 1989.

He returned to Iowa to coach the Iowa Barnstormers in 1995 until 2003 after the team relocated to New York as the NY Dragons. John in his career made positive impacts with the players, coaches, and staff he worked with seeing many going on to greater things after their time together.  John was an avid golfer and enjoyed his annual fishing trips to northern Saskatchewan.

The service will take place Tuesday, January 31st at 2 pm at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia, 700 South New Hope Road Gastonia, NC.  At the service we are asking attendees to wear their favorite football jersey.

The family will receive friends one hour prior  beginning at 1:00 pm at the funeral home.
