<p><br></p><p><br></p><p>It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of our beloved Gerald “Butch” Wayne Downey of St.John’s on Sunday, December 4th 2022, at the age of 77 years. Gerald is predeceased by his parents John and Doris Downey; parents in law Robert and Maryann Bishop ; sister Darlene Hanlon; brothers Dean and John Downey; brother in law Raymond Bishop, Jack Monahan, Wayne Yetman; sister in law Emily Monahan, Rose Bishop, Lorraine Downey; precious grandson Christopher Downey; many treasured friends Ronnie Cox, Bob Squires, Ronnie Dunn.</p><p><br></p><p>Leaving to mourn with loving memories his devoted wife of 54 years Rita nee Bishop; three sons Gerald (Melissa), Desmond (Amanda), Chris (Liz); daughter in law Tamara Morrissey; much loved grandchildren Natasha, Emilee (Wally), Ryan, Erika, Nevaeh, Ava; brother David Downey (Sharon); sisters Shirley Yetman, Wanda Blackwood (Jeff) and Kim Cassell (Colin); sister in law Sharon Downey; brothers in law Bob Bishop (Janet), John Bishop (Lynn), Gerald Royce; many cherished nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends.</p><p><br></p><p>Gerald was born and raised in the downtown St.John’s area in which he later raised his family. He worked as both dispatcher and driver for Budgens and Gulliver's taxi. He had a brilliant memory and was often called upon for directions around the city by friends and family. Gerald was an avid sports lover. He never missed a Toronto Maple Leafs or Toronto Blue Jays game. Gerald adored all of his family. It was the great joy of his life being a grandparent for 33 years. He followed the grandchildren's lives from the day to day activities to major life accomplishments. Gerald was consistent, kind, and had a quick wit that filled our lives with laughter.</p><p><br></p><p>The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Geralds medical team especially Dr.Armstrong and the team at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Centre, his family physician Dr.Wiloughby, and the staff of 5NA at the Health Sciences Centre during his final days for the exceptional care they provided him. He held both Doctors and nurses in the highest regard and trusted them fully in his care.</p><p><br></p><p>Visitation will be held at Barrett’s Funeral Home 328 Hamilton Avenue, St. John’s on Wednesday December 7th from 1:00pm-9:00pm. Funeral service will be held on Thursday December 8th at 11:00am from Barrett’s Chapel. Cremation to follow. </p><p><br></p>July 15, 1945 - December 4, 202207/15/194512/04/2022
