Joyce Arleen MacNaught Obituary

In Loving Memory

Joyce Arleen (Berge) MacNaught was born June 20, 1928 to Nickolaus and Emelia Berge. She was raised on their farm west of Rose Valley, Saskatchewan. She was the fourth of five, with one older sister Vivian, 2 brothers Phllip and Floyd and a younger sister Laila.

She attended Robbinsdale #1 Country School which was a 3.5 mile walk each way, for grades 1 through 8, and then went to Rose Valley for grades 9-11 and Archerwill for grade 12.

After high school Joyce moved to Saskatoon and attended Success Business School. She graduated from there in 1949 and went to work for Bowman Brothers as a secretary for four years. In 1952 she moved to Edmonton to join her best friend Inez Hawthorne. They had many great adventures together.

In Edmonton Joyce worked for Melton Real Estate as the Executive Secretary to the owner Stan Melton. When Stan passed away she stayed in her role working for Gary Holmes and Tim Melton.

In September 1983, Joyce married James (Jim) MacNaught. They were married for 23 wonderful years until Jim's passing in 2007. They enjoyed socializing, dancing, travelling, and had 12 years enjoying Arizona for the winters. Joyce was a long time member of the Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Edmonton and Jim joined the church after they were married.

Joyce was predeceased by her parents Nickolaus and Emelia, her spouse Jim, sister Vivian McGuire, brothers Phillip and Floyd Berge, sister in law Mary Berge, brothers in law Alec Johnson and Nick McGuire, nieces LaVonne (Johnson) Sunderland and Eileen Johnson, nephew Gary Johnson, as well as Jim's nine sisters and three brothers.

Joyce loved to travel. She visited Europe, the Philippines, Hawaii, Mexico and numerous places in the USA. She continued to travel with her sister Laila Johnson after Jim's death, enjoying at least 14 more trips.

She was also a wonderful seamstress and loved knitting and crocheting. She was a volunteer at the Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton and participated in and volunteered at many functions at her church.

Joyce lived in Edmonton until 2016 and then she made the decision to move to Tisdale to be closer to her sisters. She moved to Caleb Village, an assisted living facility in Tisdale and lived there for four years. When her health started declining she moved to Kelvindale Lodge in Kelvington, Saskatchewan, and then back to Tisdale to Newmarket Manor.

Joyce is survived by her sister Laila Johnson, her sister-in-law Margot Berge, 11 nieces, 1 nephew and many grand and great grand nieces and nephews, a very close friend Marlene Rosenthal, as well as many other friends and relatives.

If a life well lived is one where you are loved by many people, Joyce had a life well lived!

A service will be held at a later date in 2023.
