Janet (Collrin) Cameron Obituary

Janet Marie Collrin Cameron, 75, entered eternal life peacefully at her home November 28, 2022 in Northfield, Minnesota surrounded by loved ones.

She was born in Detroit, Michigan, the eldest daughter of Paul Stephen Collrin, Esq. and Mary Margaret Collrin, RN (née Corr). Janet grew up in Detroit with her six siblings where she attended Benedictine and Immaculata high schools.

After starting her family in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Janet earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting with honors from Central Michigan University. After moving to Minneapolis, she earned a Master of Arts in Design, Housing and Apparel with honors from the University of Minnesota. An artist through and through, she was passionate over her whole life about painting and drawing her family, friends, and people of interest. Her artworks have been displayed by invitation in major cities across the United States, Europe, and Asia and have received awards, including First Place.

Janet enjoyed music (especially Motown), dancing, fashion, and soaking up the warm sun. Playing with the color of her hair made her smile, whether it be pink, blue, or purple. Her family and friends know she liked to have fun and shenanigans. Her sense humor could make one roar with laughter and tears in their eyes.

As an instructor and a mentor, both at St. Olaf College and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, she inspired thousands of students, faculty, and staff to tap into their creative and artistic gifts. At the forefront of the information technology revolution, where there were "16 million colors and no turpentine," she bridged traditional artistic and design approaches with new multimedia tools and skills, thereby broadening horizons and generating possibilities in innovative ways.

As a leader and business woman, from executive director of the Fine Arts Guild in Michigan to President of Dr. Design in Minnesota, she strived for, and delivered, excellence to the people she served.

As a mother, she instilled in her children love for learning, nature, music, & each other, and to be kind. With her motley crew of rescue dogs and wildflower garden, she worked and kept the fires burning at a home she was proud to fully own. With her support, her children alternatively explored their own paths in the world and returned to spend time together and share in her wonderful pot roast.

Janet's spirit is carried on by those she fiercely loved: daughter Stephan Mary Cameron, son Ryan Robert Cameron, sisters Margaret Ann Collrin, Kathleen Marie (Michael) McGeary, and Ann Elizabeth (Randy) Pray, nieces Alison (Robert) Richards and Colleen (Michael) Glennon, nephew Matthew Collrin, brother-in-law Sari Halabi, numerous additional nieces, nephews, & cousins, as well as the extended family she made of dear friends from the many paths she walked in life. As Diana Ross & The Supremes sing, "Someday We'll Be Together."

She is reunited with those family members who passed before: her loving parents, dear sisters Mary Theresa Collrin and Rita Louise Collrin-Halabi, beloved brother Patrick Stephen Collrin, and dear nephew John Paul McGeary. She is also preceded by former spouse Robert Wayne Cameron.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of St. Dominic (Northfield, MN) on Dec. 5th, 2022 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Gregory Abbott as Celebrant. Visitation will be held one hour prior. Arrangements will be made by Bierman Funeral Home and Crematory (Northfield, MN). Interment will be private.

Everyone who recalls Janet's time on earth is asked to celebrate her life in their own way - raising a glass of their favorite drink would be quite appropriate. In remembrance of Janet's love for the dogs she rescued, the family requests any memorial tributes to be made in the form of charitable donations to Prairie's Edge Humane Society in Northfield, MN. The family would also like to thank the Allina Home and Hospice Care teams for taking great care of her, including her strong independent streak.
