Walter Henry Haberstock Obituary

Walter was born on April 18th, 1929 in Langenburg, SK. He was the second oldest child of nine born to Ludwig and Katherine Haberstock. He was baptised and confirmed in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He grew up with his two brothers and five sisters on a farm five miles north of town. He attended the one room Goehring school which was two miles north of the farm until grade nine. He worked on the farm with his Dad and that was how farming got into his blood. In 1952 he enrolled in The School of Agriculture at Saskatoon University and after he received his degree he headed north to Big River to help his Uncle John deliver ice from the river to the surrounding towns with a team of horses. In 1956 he landed a job in Regina with the government at the PFRA as a painter. Walter loved to dance and that is where he met the “Love of his Life” Alice Wagner  in 1957. They were married in the spring of 1958 on Friday the 13th of June. Soon they were blessed with four children, Della in May 1959, Donna in September 1960, Doug  in March 1963, and finally Dean in February 1967. The city life was busy and no place to raise a family so they packed up and moved to Langenburg to a small three bedroom farmhouse six miles north of town and a mile north of the Haberstock family farm. The three quarter mixed farming life was a struggle until 1982 when the farm switched to Dairy and shipping milk was the new source of steady income. Dairy work was hard and in 1992 farm life ended with an auction sale and they moved to Langenburg to 210 Carl Avenue. Dad and Mom were very involved in the church and the community. In 2019 they moved to Southview Manor where Mom still resides today. After Dad broke his hip in February 2020, his physiotherapy that was to help him walk again was discontinued due to Covid restrictions.  He then moved into the Langenburg Centennial Care Home until his passing. Special thanks to all the Care Home staff for the compassionate care during his stay.

Walter was a strong Christian, a great story teller, and a fierce competitor. He loved playing horseshoes, pool, curling and card games. His love for music helped him learn to play the violin at age 80.  He loved to watch baseball, especially the Blue Jays.

Walter was predeceased by his parents Ludwig and Katherine, his father and mother in law Jacob and Edith Wagner, his brothers Arthur, Glen, and Harold, his sisters Helen Mackay, Doreen Kienas, and Delores Naegale and his son in law Dale Gapka.

Walter is survived by his wife Alice of 64 years, two sisters Grace Haberstock and Marg Hartung(Jerry) of Langenburg, his daughters Della(Rick) of Regina, Donna(Lionel) of Calgary, his sons Doug(Lynn) of Inglis, and Dean(Roxanne) of Southey, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Dad was extremely honoured and proud when his second youngest great grandson took his name Wade Walter.

Pallbearers are Dean Haberstock, Keith Haberstock, Blaine Haberstock, Derek Haberstock, Tyler Haberstock, Kevin Hartung, Leeim McDonough, and Kyle McDonough.

Honorary Pallbearers are “All those in Attendance today”.
