John Edward Granby, Sr. Norfolk, Virginia Obituary

John Edward Granby, Sr.

Mr. John Edward Granby Sr., of Virginia Beach entered eternal life on Wednesday, November 23rd at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, Virginia Beach, Virginia surrounded by his family. John was born in Edenton, North Carolina on August 8, 1941 to his late father, Charlie Cliffton Granby Sr. and late mother, Katie Lyons Granby. John was married to Bettye Lou Fleming Granby, the love of his life for over 55 years and from this union four children were born, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren, whom he adored.

John accepted Christ at an early age at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church in Edenton, NC. He started working at an early age in Jacksonville, NC. He later moved to Virginia Beach, VA and worked with his late brother, William “Buddy” at Chicken-N-The Box. John married his wife, Bettye shortly after he started working at Chicken-N-The Box. Shortly after marriage, John and Bettye purchased their home in the Kenneth Grove section of Virginia Beach. John then obtained the needed credentials to become a Merchant Mariner. Later, John decided not to become a Merchant Mariner and took a job at Valley Poultry so that he could be at home with his family. After a number of years at Valley Poultry, he decided to advance his skills and went to truck driver’s training school to obtain his commercial driver’s license (CDL). After obtaining his CDL, John started working for O’boyle Tank Line, driving big rigs. After six years of working for O’boyle Tank Line, he received an opportunity to work for Nova Chemicals as a polymer technician where he retired after 27 years of service. Upon retirement, he volunteered as a receptionist at Princess Anne Courthouse for four years.

John was an extraordinary husband and father, who absolutely loved his family. He expressed his love through his actions and did whatever was in his power to provide for his family with God’s strength. He along with his wife raised their children to have admiration for the Lord, to walk in integrity and he often said, “You do, what you know is right, no matter what.” He worked to assist and push his four children to obtain a college education. John set the standard high for his children, but was a gentle giant who spanked his children with his eyes only, never saying harsh words.

John had many friends that he enjoyed talking to and spending time with, grabbing a meal, working out at the gym and hunting. Once you became a friend or an acquaintance of John, it was for life. He was a man of his word and a loyal friend.

John was a member of First Lynnhaven Baptist Church for over 40 years and in earlier years he was an usher. He joined the male chorus in later years. John loved to sing the old time hymns with his brothers in Christ as he would often say, “There was power in the old time songs.” John was also a member of the Masonic Temple Lodge, No. 69 Oceana of Virginia Beach.

John was predeceased by his ten siblings: Dorothy, Barbara, Cora, Janie, Washington, Margaret, Charlie, Gloria, Katie and William “Buddy”; four in-laws: Robert, Mattie, Richard Jr. and Addie.

John leaves to cherish his loving and devoted wife, Bettye F. Granby; four children, Marcia Antionette Granby-Sprankle of Greensboro, MD, John Edward Granby Jr. (Cynthia) of Alpharetta, GA, Angie Catrice Granby White of Virginia Beach, VA and Ebony Lynn Granby of Virginia Beach, VA; four grandchildren, Zachary (Tearea), Kala, Sydney and Jonathan; two great grandchildren, Princeton and Londyn; three sisters, Marjorie Tredwell of Jacksonville, NC, Rosa Harrell of Zion, IL, Mary Hoggard (William “Duke”- like a brother) of Chesapeake, VA; two adopted sisters/biological cousins, Cynthia (Baby) Blue of Uniondale, NY and Marian Blue of Uniondale, NY; one brother, James (Sandra) Granby of Tyner, NC; two sister-in-laws, Mary Granby of Virginia Beach, VA and Gloria (Roosevelt) Tyler of Baltimore, MD; two brother-in-laws, James “Sam” Fleming of Ahoskie, NC; James “June” Holley of Cary, NC; four nephews that grew up with him, Sylvester, Larry “Butterball,” Stanley and Albert; along with a host of special nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
