Marie Ann Chenevey Obituary

Marie Ann Chenevey, age 85, of Smithville, formerly of Orrville, earned her sparkling wings on Monday, November 21, 2022, at her home in Smithville, in the arms of her granddaughter Amy, and with her family by her side.

Marie was born on December 15, 1936, in Providence, Rhode Island, to the late Armando and Raffalle (Carcatra) Giarrusso. She graduated from Mount Pleasant High School and later graduated from The University of Akron Wayne College. She married James F. Chenevey on July 4, 1955, in Providence, Rhode Island, and enjoyed nearly fifty-two years together, raising two children, Alan & Denise. James passed away on May 6, 2007.

She worked as the Clerk Treasurer for Orrville City Schools while putting herself through college and upon graduating went on to proudly be the Business Education Teacher for Wayne County Schools Career Center, retiring in 1999.

Marie was well known for her contagious laugh and big smile, lighting up any room she walked into. She loved big and made sure everyone around her felt the love she had for them. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and many other community groups. She founded the National Honor Society at the Wayne County Schools Career Center, which in 2000 was renamed the WCSCC National Honor Society Marie Chenevey Chapter. She loved her students and always found ways to care for others in her life and the community. Marie enjoyed playing cards, singing, and dancing. Most of all, Marie took great joy in being “Nana”; being the biggest fan and number one supporter in her grandchildren and great granddaughter’s lives.

Surviving are son, Alan (Angela) Chenevey of Wooster; three grandchildren, Amy (Michael) Crosland (Chenevey) of Smithville, Drew Chenevey of Columbus, and Jacob Withrow of Wooster; two great granddaughters, Madison "Nana" Marie and Averie Jalayne Crosland both of Smithville; brother, Peter Giarrusso of Providence, RI; sister-in-law, Mary McCoy of Wooster; and four nieces and nephews, Jeannie Wilson of Wooster, Patty (Kurt) Sullivan of Ocean Isle, NC, Johnny McCoy of Wooster, and Sherry Giarrusso of Providence, RI.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Denise M. Chenevey, and brother-in-law Pat G. McCoy.

Friends may call on Sunday, November 27, 2022, at Auble Funeral Home, 512 East Oak Street, Orrville, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Services will be held at 12:00 pm on Monday, November 28, 2022, at Auble Funeral Home with Ohio’s LifeCare Hospice Chaplain Daron Butler leading the proceedings. A private family burial will take place afterwards at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville.

Amy would like to send a special heartfelt thank you to Dr. Jordan Garrison, Rebekah Stutzman CNP, Sumer Riley, Caitlin Kline, Julie Pittman, Jeanette Shilling and most of all her newly “adopted granddaughter” Annette Steiner for all the love and care over the years to help keep Nana at home where she so dearly wanted to be.
