Reverend Michael Nicholas Leon Obituary

DEACON MICHAEL NICHOLAS LEON

Michael Leon, a deacon in the archdiocese of Miami for 31 years, passed away on November 22, 2022. He was 82 years old. Michael was born on February 22, 1940 in Key West Florida and attended grammar school and high school in Key West. After a brief time in the armed services, he began working for Boise Cascade as a sales manager for 30 years. Michael was an active member of the Catholic Church throughout his life and was committed to service of God’s people. During his time as a parishioner at Little Flower parish in Coral Gables, he began to feel a calling to ordained ministry which was encouraged by his pastor, parish family and his brother, Father James (Jim) Hampton. Michael was ordained deacon on January 5, 1991 and served for many years at Little Flower parish and eventually at Blessed Sacrament parish in Fort Lauderdale. Additionally, he helped at various other parishes in Broward County after his retirement. What set him apart was his care of the poor, elderly and disenfranchised throughout his ministry and life. Throughout his life, Michael had a special care for his brothers Jim and John and his sisters Vera and Rose. And, his nieces and nephews were the apple of his eye! Michael is survived by his aunt Irene Tsangaris, his brother John Leon, Sr. and sister Rose Hernandez, nieces Mary Wantuck, Grace Wantuck, Alexis Wilder, Taia Leon and Linda Osborne and nephews John Leon, Jr., Michael Leon, Michael R. Leon, Sergio (Marty) Hernandez and Bobby Osborne. Throughout his life, one of Michael’s greatest attributes was to share unending hospitality with his family, friends and anyone who would enjoy a beverage or two, and great meal (Mike was a GREAT cook!!) and conversation.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at Saint Pius Catholic Church on Fort Lauderdale Beach. There will be a short viewing at 10 AM followed by celebration of the mass of resurrection at 10:30 AM followed by burial at our Lady Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Fort Lauderdale.
