Oscar Armondo Montejo Obituary

Oscar Armando Montejo died peacefully on November, 7 in Kauai with his son Oscar at his side.

Oscar was born August 30th, 1931 in Holguin, Cuba to Cuban parents. He was raised in Cuba and attended Havana University, where he completed his degree in Architecture. Oscar moved to America and resided in Florida, where he became an American Citizen. He joined the air force in 1956 and served four years as a basic airman. Later, he settled in New York and, not long after, met and married Linda Lanier Levy and started a family. Oscar eventually began working in the food management industry. The family moved from New York to Florida and later to Maryland but eventually ended up moving to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where the family had previously spent many summers vacationing in North Truro. When Oscar became divorced, Oscar eventually moved to Provincetown with his youngest son, Sam. Oscar worked in the busy downtown making taffy and fudge until he decided to open his own fast-food restaurant, Oscar’s Footlong Hotdogs.

Oscar’s hobby was to whittle and carve wooden objects and works of art from wood blocks or drift wood. He had a natural artistic ability which seemed to come easy to him. He enjoyed tucking away into his little workshop and making beautiful one-of-a-kind creations which he usually gave away. He had a flawless ability to draw and developed his draughtsmanship while attending college for his degree. Oscar also held a fascination with ancient history with a particular interest in the pryamids of Egypt.

Oscar eventually retired to the Florida Keys where he operated a small business at the Big Pine Key Flea Market. He would build canopies for vendors and he also kept a stall for himself where he sold souvenirs to tourists. Oscar loved his garden and grew fruit in his back yard where he also built a fish pond. It was here in the Florida Keys that he cared for his elderly mother, Luz until she passed away at home at the age of 99.

Oscar was well loved by his flea market community and spent many happy years amongst his fellow vendors and regular customers until he decided to move back to Cape Cod to spend time with family including his grandchildren.  He later moved to Kaui with his son, Oscar. When his health declined, he went into long term care at Mahelona Medical Center where he was blessed to be visited often by his son Oscar, grandchildren Oscar and Kiara and their mother Erin as well as his four great grandchildren, all of whom filled his life with so much love.

Known for his delectable Cuban food, Oscar enjoyed cooking meals for family and friends, an ability he passed onto his sons and daughter. He loved being with his children and grandchildren, taking walks on the beach, reading, listening to music, relaxing in his hammock at the end of a long day, conversing in Spanish on the phone with his family who lived in the Miami area and enjoying life. He had a sharp sense of humor and always liked to poke fun. Oscar also enjoyed writing poetry, which was yet another outlet for his creative expressions and thoughts.

Occasionally, Oscar would speak of his life in Cuba. He loved his home country and would talk about life there before the Cuban revolution. One memory that stands out is how much he loved his father and how his father would hold his hand and walk him to church every Sunday. He spoke of a time well lived there, one that his children and grandchildren never witnessed. Another one of his great stories of growing up in Cuba is that of a family pig on their farm that kept digging and digging at the foot of a tree. The pig dug until it reached a box deep in the ground which was filled with a small fortune of old Spanish coins. It is the hope of his children that they will one day soon travel to Cuba and spread some of his remaining ashes in his birth-home of Holguin as was his wished.

Oscar is survived by his four children; Ricardo, Rachael, Oscar and Samuel and ex-wife, Linda Landsberg. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Ricardo, Oscar, Kiara, Hanna, Sophia, Cassandra and his great grandchildren, Cyprus, Alana, Ryden and Kingston and daughter-in-law, JoAnne and son-in-law, Kevin. Oscar is also survived by many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the care team at Mahelona Medical Center and Kauai Veterans Hospital for all they did for Oscar and his family.

Oscar will be greatly missed and long remembered for his love of family and friends, making jokes, cooking, reading, writing, music, art and nature. The family will make arrangements for a private service in the near future, both in Hawaii and on Cape Cod.
