Matiana Moran Gonzalez

Our beloved Matiana Morán González passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on October 30, 2022, in San Antonio. She was 82 years old.

Matiana was born on September 21, 1940, in Edinburg, Texas, to Eusebia Gómez and José Morán. A true fronteriza, she was raised in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, but moved to el otro lado when she wed Juan Herrera González in 1965. They were married for 57 years, celebrating their anniversary just days before her death.

A fierce advocate of education, Matiana graduated from Pan American University-Brownsville with a bachelors degree at the age of 42, and then taught for 24 years in the Brownsville Independent School District; most of those were teaching second grade at Cromack Elementary. Always active in the Roman Catholic Church, she served for many years at the Parish of St. Luke as a lector, catechist, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, and Altar Servers coordinator, which she guided for 24 years. Moving from Brownsville to San Antonio in October 2021, her family joined the Parish of St. Helena.

Matiana had a quick smile and mischievous sense of humor, which she would practice on her children, grandchildren, and students alike. There was no stopping “la Señora G.”

She is preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Tadeo Morán and Marcelino Morán; her brother-in-law Oziel Chapa; her mother-in-law Wenceslada González; and her sister-in-law Antonia Torres.
