Mary Ellen Clark Obituary

Mary Ellen (York) Clark, daughter of Harry Clarence and Clara Elizabeth (Lizzie) York was born on July 19, 1928 in their home in Stockton, Missouri. On the evening of October 22, 2022, she passed away peacefully surrounded by those who loved her, in the Stockton Healthcare Facility, Stockton, Missouri. She is preceded in death by her husband Bill Clark, her sister Agnes Harris, her brother Darrel York, granddaughter Lindsay Ireland, grandson Michael Clark, great grandson Johnny Baumgardner and her parents Clarence and Lizzie York. Mary Ellen was 94 years old, and a beautiful soul.

Mary Ellen was married to Bill Clark after his return home from the service on March 23, 1946. To this union were born two daughters, Pamela, and Patricia, and a son, Alan.

Bill and Mary Ellen, on September 1, 1955 bought Clark’s Food Store, located on the Stockton square, from his brother Adrian Clark. Together, she and Bill ran the grocery business for 15 years before selling in 1970. The two of them decided that they missed the grocery business, so in 1971 they bought Tillery Market, and a year later built a new grocery store naming it Clark’s Food Store in Humansville, Missouri, and ran it successfully for 12 years. After fully retiring, they then devoted their time to their family, raising Angus cattle, miniature donkeys, working their beautiful flower garden, and fishing at Bennett Springs and Roaring River State Parks.

Mary Ellen loved her family and you could always guarantee she was spending time with them. She loved to cook and host holidays where you would find her famous strawberry pretzel salad ready to devour. Her gatherings always included laughter, and a warm open door policy where you could rest and relax together in her little white house on the corner of Church Street.

Mary Ellen was a member of the Stockton Christian Church, where she and her husband Bill were members. They were baptized together on August 21, 1956 by Roy Wheeler in Stockton, Missouri. Her church was filled with family and friends who felt like family to her. She was also a member of the Calico Clippers group and enjoyed quilting and embroidery in her free time and the occasional lunch out with friends. Mary Ellen also loved listening to gospel music, collecting coins and baseball cards, playing solitaire at her dining room table, going to watch the Stockton Tigers and watching sports on tv. Mary Ellen will be deeply missed by her family and friends as she was such a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

Mary Ellen is survived by her brother Charley York, Fair Play, Missouri; sister Peggy Jones, Stockton, Missouri; daughters Pamela Bateman, Springfield, Missouri; Patricia and husband Dave Steinmuller, Stockton, Missouri; son Alan and wife Susan Clark, Atlanta, Georgia; three grandsons James Baumgardner, Littleton, Colorado; Dustin Baumgardner, Springfield, Missouri; Matthew Clark, Phoenix, Arizona. Two granddaughters, Stephanie and husband David Wheeler; and Heather and husband John Hale both of Stockton, Missouri. Four great grandsons, Jake and wife Elli Wheeler, Drew and Tate Wheeler, and J.J. and wife Amber Hale. Five great granddaughters, Lucy, Clio, Phoebe, and Harlie Baumgardner, and Hannah Hale; and one great great granddaughter Hadley Wheeler and a host of other relatives and friends. Our hearts will miss our "Gran”, but we know she is with Jesus, and for that, these same hearts overwhelmingly rejoice with her.
