Brian Neal Michaelson Obituary

Brian “Mike” Michaelson passed peacefully surrounded by his immediate family on Friday, October 7, 2022. He is survived by his wife Marge, sons Jeff and David (Julie Alcazar), granddaughter Devin, sister Carol Bradley, nieces Jill, Rebecca, Rachel and Jennifer, nephews Zev, David and Jason, brother in law Ed Reiner and many loving friends.

There will be a graveside service Wednesday, October 12, at 9 am, at El Camino Memorial Park, followed by a meal of consolation at the Michaelson home. There will be services Wednesday and Thursday, October 12 and 13 at 7 pm so that the family can say Kaddish. Marge will begin formal shiva after the Hagim, with minyanim at 7 pm on Tuesday, October 18, Wednesday October 19, Thursday October 20, Saturday October 22 and Sunday October 23. She will receive condolence visits during the day.

Though his family still calls him Brian, he acquired the nickname Mike when he moved to California where he had always wanted to live—by the beach. He received his BS at Ohio University and his graduate degree in international relations from Long Beach State University. He worked at NCR in Rancho Bernardo and began teaching business administration and computer science at Palomar College in San Marcos, CA in 1969. During his 34 year career at Palomar, he founded the Computer Science Department and was active in the Faculty Association. He enjoyed editing so much that he declined the opportunity to write his own textbook, after successfully editing 100 Computer Science textbooks. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 2003.

Mike is a charter member at Congregation Beth Am and served on the board at TrueCare, an organization that provides wellness programs and healthcare in underserved communities. He is remembered for his love of family, his devotion to Judaism, his passion for turning complete strangers into friends, and mostly for his kindness.

Family requests donations to Congregation Beth Am, ADA, FFB, AIPAC, TrueCare, or JNF.
