Lois Kulow, age 97, of Hubbard, Iowa completed her life on October 2, 2022, at the Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard, Iowa, where she had been a resident for six years.

Due to the continued presence of the COVID virus in the Hubbard community, there will regretfully be no visitation or church services. Instead, a private graveside service for the immediate family took place at the Hubbard Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Laura Renault.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Zion United Church of Christ for the General Fund.

Lois Ann Meier was born on July 26, 1925, at home on the family farm in Hubbard, Iowa, to Henry and Emma Meier, the fourth of five children. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard and received her education at Hubbard Community School. After high school graduation in 1943, Lois continued her education and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she received her Teaching Certificate in 1945. Lois taught 6th grade and music activities in Traer, Iowa, for two years.

On June 17, 1947, Lois was united in marriage to Lowell Hermann Kulow in Hubbard, Iowa, and began her life as a dedicated farmer’s wife and homemaker. They were the second generation to farm the Carl Kulow homestead. Lois maintained the lawn and was especially proud of her large garden where, in the early years, she harvested tomatoes and cantaloupes, canned sweetcorn, peas, and beans, and tended rows of as many as 100 gladiolas. When Lowell and Lois built their new home in town in 1981, they retired from farming. Together they raised three children and shared nearly 65 years of marriage and memories before Lowell’s passing in 2012.

Lois was a life-long member of Zion United Church of Christ, where she attended regularly, sang in the choir and Christmas cantatas, and was active in Women’s Fellowship. She also volunteered in her community as Meals On Wheels Coordinator, Adult Night School Director, Girls 4-H Leader, and campaigned for the construction of the Hubbard Care Center. She enjoyed needlework and various crafts. Until the age of 91, Lois maintained her home and looked forward to regular get-togethers to play Bridge and 500 with her friends.

Lois is survived by her three children: Kaye Kulow of Davenport, IA, Keith Kulow of Ozark, MO, and Kurt and his wife Tamarra Kulow of Hubbard, IA; six grandchildren: Justin, Stacey, Jeffrey, Shera, Scott, and Aaron; ten great-grandchildren, as well as three loving nieces: Connie Reidel, Marilyn Vander Weide, and Karen Winter.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband Lowell, her parents and grandparents, brother Wayne Meier, and three sisters: Evelyn Meier, Verna Brunemeier, and Gladys Winter.

With loving thoughts, we give thanks to God for the life and memory of Lois Ann Kulow, an uncommonly resilient lady who endured and survived with grace the challenges and disappointments that came her way. May she find eternal happiness and peace in Heaven, forever re-united with her husband and loved ones in the loving embrace of God.
