<p>Mary Jenkins Worthington of Virginia Beach passed away Monday, September 26, 2022.</p><p>Mary is survived by her husband, Thurman Worthington, and daughter, Kim Worthington, of Virginia Beach, VA.<br></p><p>She was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Wilbert A. Jenkins of Chatham, VA.<br></p><p>Mary was born in 1936 in Griffin, GA. (just south of Atlanta) where Dr. Jenkins was involved in peanut research. The Jenkins family moved to Chatham, VA. when Mary was a youngster. Dr. Jenkins became director of Virginia Tech’s Tobacco Research Station and helped develop a black shank resistant tobacco.<br></p><p>Mary grew up in Chatham and graduated from Chatham High School. She then graduated from The University of North Carolina in Greensboro, and taught at Ringgold High School in Pittsylvania County, VA.<br></p><p>Mary and Thurman became engaged, and she moved to Virginia Beach, VA. and she began her teaching career at Virginia Beach High School on 25th Street (now a middle school). They were married on December 27, 1960.<br></p><p>Mary and Thurman have lived in Virginia Beach (Historic Alanton) for most of their sixty-one and a half years together. They did live in Richmond, VA., and Columbus, OH. For short periods. In 1971 they returned to Virginia Beach and purchased a lot in Alanton only blocks from their earlier home. Their daughter, Dionne Kimble Worthington was born on October 1, 1971, and they moved into the home where they have lived for more than fifty years in December 1972. During Kim’s early years Mary was active in the Alanton PTA and the Sea Sprite Circle of King’s Daughter. Mary and Thurman have been contributing members of Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, UT for more than 25 years and made their first two trips to volunteer in 2008.<br></p><p>When Kim entered middle school, Mary returned to teaching English at Cox High School, and retired in 1999.<br></p><p>Mary’s family thanks Dr. Gregory Warth and his wonderful staff for outstanding care for more than 30 years.<br></p><p>Mary’s graveside service will be held Thursday, September 29, 2022, 1:00 p.m. at Chatham Burial Park, Chatham, VA.<br></p><p>In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request memorial donations be made to Benton’s House, Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Canyon Road, Kanab, UT. 84741-5000, or www.bestfriends.org<br></p><p>Norris Funeral Services, Chatham Chapel is serving the Worthington family.<br></p><p><br></p>

Mary Jenkins Worthington of Virginia Beach passed away Monday, September 26, 2022.

Mary is survived by her husband, Thurman Worthington, and daughter, Kim Worthington, of Virginia Beach, VA.

She was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Wilbert A. Jenkins of Chatham, VA.
