Thomas J. McCarthy, 84 of West Deer Township, died Thursday August 11, 2022 at UPMC Passavant, McCandless. He was born January 2, 1938 in Pittsburgh to the late John F. and Mary A. (Murray) McCarthy. Tom grew up in the Sheridan section of Pittsburgh graduating from St. James High School in the West End. He received his Bachelor’s Degree, from Duquesne University, and while he was teaching, earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Penn State University. Tom was an Elementary Educator for the West Deer and then the Deer Lakes School District, teaching science and health. He taught at the Bairdford Elementary School, Russellton Elementary School, East Union Elementary School and then at the Deer Lakes Elementary Center, retiring after 32 years of teaching. As a teacher, Tom was also the Tennis Coach. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Parish, West Deer. He enjoyed spending time with his friends for daily coffee at the former Dineff’s Donut Shop and most recently at Siciliano’s, were he met his friends to solve all the world challenges.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years Rachel A. (Curran) McCarthy, children Mary (Rob) Groth of Richfield, OH, Shelly (Jim) Karwowski of San Antonio, TX, Maggie McCarthy of Thousand Oak, CA, Tom (Patti) McCarthy of Indiana and Jim (Renee) McCarthy of West Deer; grandchildren Michael, Rachelle, Alex, T. Lucas and Morgan and great-grandson Johnny and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, J. Murray McCarthy and her sisters Leone R. Reno, Margaret M. McCarthy and Maryann Tarter.

Family will receive friends Sunday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM in the SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME, 23 McKrell Road, Russellton, West Deer Twp., where parting prayers will be Monday 9:30 AM with a Catholic Funeral Mass following at 10 AM in Our Lady of the Lakes Parish – Transfiguration Church, Russellton. He will be laid to rest near his family in St. Martin’s Cemetery, in the Elliott Section of Pittsburgh.
