Dorothy Anne Wegimont Obituary

Saturday morning on the sixth of August, the world lost an amazing person. Dorothy “Dotty” (Smith) Wegimont passed away after 90 wonderful, healthy years in Rhode Island. Dotty was a proud daughter, sister, mother, mother-in-law, auntie, grandma, and loyal friend. She was born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island to Anna and Harold Smith on January 8, 1932. She and her brother Bobby grew up in Woonsocket and loved attending family parties and music sessions. Dotty and her family always loved picnicking on Great Island and were fortunate enough to buy property on Wild Goose Lane in 1947. Dotty met the love of her life, Joseph Henry Wegimont, of Woonsocket when she saw him play the mandolin. Married at 19, Dotty and Henry loved raising their two children, Colleen and Butch, in Woonsocket and always enjoyed their escapes to “The Beach House” in Narragansett. Dotty valued working with the wonderful folks at, among many other interesting jobs, Woonsocket City Hall and Tupperware. Following their retirements, Henry and Dotty moved to Great Island in 1994 to be closer to their grandchildren, and the water. After the too early passing of Henry in 2002, Dotty became a dog mom to Ginger, who left this world after 17 beautiful years this past November. Her most recent trip to the “poodle parlor” was the start of many memorable conversations. Dotty moved to Shadow Farms in Wakefield in 2013. She was highly active and was a doting friend of all dogs at Marina Park. She fiercely loved her family and friends and truly had the memory of an elephant while sharing stories of past experiences. She had one of the best dice rolls in the Ocean State and always enjoyed beating Colleen in a game of Scrabble. She truly kept up with the times, as she was active on Facebook leaving wonderful loving comments to all of her friends. Dotty always said that her favorite spot was sitting on the porch on Great Island and watching all the fun everyone had. She loved animals, especially the fluffy kind, and loved her dog Ginger with all her heart. Dotty is survived by daughter Colleen, son Gary “Butch”, daughter-in-law Mel, grandchildren Matthew and Jay, many nephews and nieces, and a considerable number of those who cared for her. Services are to be held at Peace Dale Congregational Church in Wakefield, R.I. on Thursday 8/11/2022 starting with a 9:30 a.m. coffee hour followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am. Burial will be held on Friday 8/12/2022 at 10:30 a.m. at Rhode Island Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 301 S County Trail, Exeter, RI.
