Abraham Thomas Obituary

BELOVED HUSBAND, FATHER, GRANDFATHER, GREAT GRANDFATHER, DEDICATED CHURCH MEMBER, AND FRIEND Mr. Abraham Thomas was born on June 3rd, 1921 in Georgetown, South Carolina. In April 1941, Abraham joined the United States Navy. In December 1946, he married the love of his life, Daisy Mae Sherald and together they raised two beautiful children, James and Gloria. They traveled around the country with their family until Abraham retired from the Navy in April 1961, and decided to settle in good old Portsmouth, Virginia. As a retired Navy cook, Abraham worked for over twenty years as a supervisor of food services at Portsmouth General Hospital. Abraham also provided catering services. His cooking expertise and skills made him a sought after chef for weddings, holidays, and other special events. But he really enjoyed using his cooking skills to serve the Lord and his fellow members at Fellowship United Church of Christ. He loved to cook and feed people! Everyone at Fellowship knew if Abraham was cooking, they would be getting a treat! This was his special ministry. Abraham Thomas was a Charter Member of Fellowship United Church of Christ. He was at the 1964 groundbreaking of Fellowship’s current building; and, at age 101, had served the Lord under several Fellowship Pastors. Abraham served on the Trustee Ministry for almost 20 years and was honored as a Trustee Emeritus in 1998. For years he served on the Men’s Choir and was also a Fellowship Boy Scout Leader. He also was an active member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Portsmouth Chapter, for many years. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving children James Thomas (wife, Carmen) and Gloria Carter (husband, Charles); grand children, Charles and William (wife, Cyntilya); great grandchild, Amina (Mother, Lacrecia); sister, Murlian, and favorite cousin, Donna; along with many friends who loved him dearly. Abraham’s favorite scripture is Proverbs 9:10, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” His favorite hymn is “Just as I Am”. Abraham's presence in our lives will be sorely missed, but, at 101 years old, he was ready to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and his wife Daisy. They were married for 71 years when Daisy passed in 2017. To God be the glory! Rest in Peace, Abraham!!
