Philip David Maness Obituary

Mr. Philip David Maness, age 73, husband of Anita Hart Maness of 113 Sunset Dr., Union, passed away, Friday, August 5, 2022.

Mr. Maness was born in Whitmire, January 10, 1949, a son of the late William Clarence and Hattie Lee Worthy Maness. He was a 1967 graduate of Whitmire High School, a 1971 graduate of the University of South Carolina and received a Master of Education in 1973 from the Citadel.

From 1972 until 2016, Mr. Maness served as an Athletic Director, a football coach and a golf coach with 23 of those years at Aynor High School as Head Coach. He was a member of the Whitmire High School Hall of Fame and the Aynor High School Hall of Fame. His career included serving as the South’s Assistant and Head Coach of the North-South All-Star Football game and Assistant Coach of the Shrine Bowl. In 1996, he was the South Carolina Golf Coach of the year. He was a member of the South Carolina Coaches Association where in 1986 he served as President.

Mr. Maness was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was an avid Gamecock fan and football fan. He was a mentor to a number of athletes across North and South Carolina. An avid golfer, he loved watching and teaching his children, Ann and Michael to play the game.

Mr. Maness was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving in addition to his wife of 50 years, Anita, are a son, Michael Hart Maness and wife Tinsley of Greenville and a daughter, Mae Anita “Ann” Maness Maloney and husband Kyle of Hilton Head Island. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Elouise Mae Maness and Michael Hart Maness, Jr.  He was predeceased by a sister, Vivian Ruth.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, August 8, 2022 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Lee Phillips, Mr. Chad Sarvis and Coach Marion Shaw.

Visitation will be held in the Fellowship Hall of the church immediately following the service. A private burial will be held at Whitmire Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Cloy Ford, Frank “Chip” Small, Phil Hodge, Jason Allen, Thomas Whitmire Suber, Brian Hennecy, Jonathan Graham, Doug Shaw, Jr. and Jimmy Ray Edwards.

All former football players, golf players and coaches are asked to form the honorary escort.

The family will be at the home, 113 Sunset Dr., Union.
