On July 1, 1929, Mary B. Caulfield was born to her late parents, James and Helena Caulfield while they were vacationing by the shore in Waterford, Ireland. She was the oldest of three children and the last to join her siblings, Thomas and Annie, in Heaven. Mary had a wonderful life in Ireland but took a leap of faith and decided to come to America as a teenager. She made a life for herself in America but she always kept her home in Ireland close to her heart and is leaving behind many nieces and nephews along with her sister-in-law, Mary Caulfield who still reside there.

Mary was an artist, having taught herself how to paint, many years ago. Her paintings often featured beaches, tropical scenes and other beautiful landscapes that she admired. She vacationed in Hawaii with her first husband and truly loved the beautiful beaches, which were often inspiration for many of her paintings. She also wrote a memoir about her life but she never had it published. Mary was always a very hard worker, often providing for her family by cleaning other people’s houses. When she and her first husband Robert retired, they bought and ran The Old Homestead Inn in Barnet, VT. Running a bed and breakfast was her husband’s dream but quickly became her own, as she always embraced the dreams of others. They successfully ran the bed & breakfast for seven years before her husband passed away and she returned to Long Island to be with her family. Mary loved everyone around her, often preferring to sing an Irish tune to a stranger in order to brighten their day rather than go dancing with friends. Anyone who crossed her path, always walked away happier to have met her. She loved her family with a pride bigger than that of any lion and did whatever she could to keep the family together. To be loved by Mary Murphy was a true privilege. To be on the receiving end of one of her famous smiles, was an honor. To have known her was a blessing.

She is predeceased by her late husbands, Robert D. Gordon and Thomas J. Murphy. She leaves behind her children Valerie Brennan (John), Robert Gordon (Cynthia), Carol Nitowitz (Michael) and Mary Gordon-Ray (Rick), her grandchildren Melinda, Michael, Jessica, Christine, Javan, Sheva, Amanda, Eric, Carolyn, Robert and Colleen. Great grandchildren Lilli, Mason, Meadow, Bodi, Matthew, Alexander, Dylan, Fiona, Ellie, Tala, Grant and Claire. Having just celebrated her 93rd birthday, Mary was soon called home to God on 8/3/2022. She lived a very colorful life, always giving of herself and her love. Mary was a true animal lover and especially loved her many cats over the years. She leaves behind her four cats Nelly, Julie, Maggie and Rascal.
