James S. Bruno Obituary

James S. “Jim” Bruno, 89, formerly of Normal, died at 9:11 a.m.., Thursday, August 4, 2022 at Martin Health Center, Bloomington. His funeral will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 9, 2022 at Epiphany Catholic Church with Rev. Peter Okola officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Normal. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m., Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse, 585 County Road Z, Sinsinawa, Wisconsin 53824-9701. Jim was born December 12, 1932 in Chicago, the son of Antonio and Felicia Scornavacche Bruno. They were proud Americans of Italian Heritage. He married Phyllis Jeanne Breider on June 24, 1961, the loveliest of coeds at ISU. She preceded him in death on May 21, 2017. Surviving are three children, Thomas James (Elsa) Bruno, Colorado Springs, CO, Jeannie Katherine (John) Atkenson, Orland Park and David Anthony (Barbara) Bruno, Bloomington; seven grandchildren, Lucas, Seth and Joseph Bruno, Erika and Michael Atkenson, and Adam (Sophia) and Alexander Bruno; and a sister, Louise Margaret Mansch. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Ann Irwin. Jim graduated from Chicago Vocational High School in 1950 and received both his Bachelor and Master’s Degree from Illinois State University. He taught at Bloomington High School and was also a guidance counselor. He served in US Army’s 9th Infantry Division during the Korea War. He held the rank of Sergeant and served as the Fiscal Section Chief.
