Billy Eugene Smith Obituary

Billy Eugene Smith, 90, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2022 at 2:30am from Covid-19 at St. Elizabeth Nursing Home in Delphi. Our Dad was born March 6, 1932 in Mifflin, IN, to Henry and Minnie (Redden) Smith. On July 23, 1961 he married Dixielee Louise Watkins. She preceded him in death on February 18, 2004. At age 17, Dad enlisted in the US Army and served with the 9th Field Artillery Unit in Korea (1950-1952). He was a member of the VFW in English, IN. He worked as a lumberjack in his brother’s lumber yard in English, IN and drove semis with his stepfather-in-law and 2 brothers-in-law. Later in life he worked at Essex in Lafayette. Surviving are his two daughters: Jerilyn Smith of Delphi, and Kelli (Jim) Snowberger of Delphi; and unofficially adopted daughter, Taylor Montes of Stockwell; special nephew Orville “Bubby” Qualters (Sandy) of English, IN; brother-in-law, Jim Leach of Lehigh, FL and sisters-in-law Donna Biddle of Fairport, NY, Diann (John) Leach of Hubbard, OH, and Margie Clayton of Lafayette along with many, many nieces and nephew and their families. By Kelli’s marriage, he had two grandchildren, Jimmy (Belinda) Snowberger of Delphi and Angela Kay Snowberger of Monticello; seven great-grandchildren (and their spouses) and 15 great-great grandchildren. From our little sister Taylor, he was recently blessed with her daughters, Estella and Violet. Along with his wife, Dixielee, he is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and their wives: James, Ernest (Pearl) and Lewis (Mildred) and his sisters and their husbands: Dorothy, Nellie and Mary (Virgil), his mother-in-law Geraldine (John) Leach, brothers-in-law Basil Watkins, Donald Biddle and Thomas Watkins. He never knew a stranger and loved playing guitar and listening to old Country music especially Hank Williams, Sr., Patsy Cline and old gospel music. He loved being outdoors and bird watching with Mom. In his younger years, he could be found tinkering in his garage on just about everything that had a motor. Visitation will be held from 11am – 1pm Sunday, August 14, 2022 at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Funeral service will begin at 1pm with Reverend Joe Smith (Dad’s nephew) officiating. Military honors by The American Legion Post 11 and the Indiana Patriot Guard Riders. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Stockwell, beside his beloved wife, Dixielee.
