He was born on May 16, 1932, in Gay, WV, son of the late Veldra Lloyd and Freda Ethel Casto Staats. Bob was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Steelworkers Local Union #5668 where he was employed at Ravenswood Aluminum for over 30 years. He was an award-winning sports editor for the Jackson County Papers for 30 years. Bob was also a member of the WV Sport Writers Association. He served on the nominating committee of the Mid-Ohio Valley Sports Hall of Fame. He was an avid golfer and fan of all sports. He was inducted into the Ravenswood High School Football Hall of Fame as a player and sportswriter in 2016. He was an all-state football player in 1949. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carol Franklin Staats; sons, Tony and Tim (Connie); daughter, Marsha Engle (Calvin); grandson, David (Lyndsey); granddaughters, Amanda O'Dell, Leigh Ann (Jason) Kerns, and Melissa France (Eric); step grandchildren, Heath Engle (Marsha), and Angie Michot (Mark); 9 great grandchildren; sisters, Eleanor VanKirk and Linda (Aaron) Mollohan; and brothers, Carroll (Jenny) Staats, John (Carolyn) Staats, Larry (Nedia) Staats, Cole (Diana) Staats, and Jim (Rhonda) Staats. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie O'Dell; brothers, Paul, Roland and Bernard; and brother-in-law, Gene VanKirk. The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 19, 2017, at 1:00 pm at Roush Funeral Home in Ravenswood with Reverend Anton Hager and Pastor Matt Matics officiating. Burial will follow in Jackson County Memory Gardens in Cottageville, WV. Friends may visit the family at the funeral home on Thursday, May 18, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Ravenswood Athletic Boosters, 100 Plaza Drive, Ravenswood, WV 26164.
