He was born on July 27, 1928, in Cottageville, WV, son of the late John Morgan and Ethel Florence Evans Gorrell. John was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ravenswood, and the Clarksburg VFW. He was a veteran of the US Army having served as part of the Germany Occupation Force. He was greatly loved by his family and friends, and he never met a stranger. He retired as a setup repairman at Ravenswood Aluminum. He is survived by his wife, Mable Bennett Gorrell; sons, William (Virginia) Sheaffer, John Alan (Robin) Gorrell; 3 stepchildren, Terry (Alicia) Bennett, Beverly Casto, and Bryan (Kim) Bennett; grandchildren, Debbie Randolph, Tammy Kuhl, Tracy Parsons, Jay Gorrell, Casey Bennett, Tyler Bennett, Jacob Bennett, Misti Roberts, Robert Leonard, Keith Leonard, Christine Leonard and Callie Bennett; 7 great grandchildren, and 2 sisters, Amy (Lowell) Maxey and Lila Woofter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Margaret Gorrell; daughter, Betty Ann Leonard; 2 sisters, Corrina Jo and Dixie; and brother, Darrell. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 7, 2017, at 4:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Ravenswood with Reverend Ken Peters officiating. Burial will follow in Ravenswood Cemetery with graveside military rites provided by the Jackson County Honor Guard. Friends may visit the family at the church on Sunday, May 7, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
