The son of Glen C. and Helen F. Thompson, he was born December 14, 1934 in Hurricane, WV. John is survived by his wife of 59 yrs, Ruth V. Thompson; a daughter, Janet (Kevin) Thornton of Medina Road, Jackson Co., WV; a son, John C.(Pam) Thompson, Ravenswood, WV; a son in law, Mark Wine, Fairplain, WV; a brother, Bill G.(Betty) Thompson, Palms Bay, FL; his grandchildren, Jackie Thornton, Winfield, WV, Brandon(Leighann) Thompson, Ravenswood, WV, Jessica(Christopher) Burch, Millwood, WV, Schuyler Thompson, Ravenswood, WV, Tyler(Katie) Thompson, Ravenswood, WV, and Jennifer Wine, Fairplain, WV. Also 10 great-grandchildren survive. John retired from Ravenswood Aluminum after 40 yrs of service. He was a SGT in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Korean War. He was a Master Mason at Cottageville Lodge 54 AF&AM, a 32 degree mason, Scottish Rite, of Parkersburg, WV, Life Member of VFW Post 3488, Sandyville, WV, Life Member of 1st Marine Division Association, Member American Legion 107, of Ripley, WV, Member of National Rifle Association, Life Member of Marine Corps League, Detachment 1065, Ripley, WV, Life Member of Korean War Veterans Association-Mountaineer Chapter, Charleston, WV, and was active on the rifle squad for 432 veteran funerals. John lived a life full of love, devotion, hard work and service to his fellow man. His greatest wish was that we learn to like each other as much as he loved to meet new people. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him. John was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Joyce Wine. Service will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, at 1:00 pm at Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood, WV., with Pastor Allen Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Ravenswood Cemetery with military rites provided by the Cpl Walter L. Mann, Detachment 1065, Marine Corps League and Masonic Rites provided by Cottageville 54 AF&AM. Friends may visit the family at the funeral home on Monday, August 22, from 7 to 9 pm. and 1 hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
