Timothy F. Keegan Malverne, New York Obituary

Timothy F. Keegan

An altruistic man who lived for his family, Tim Keegan was a kind and loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. A life-long learner and a man truly ahead of his time, after serving in the military, he earned two Master’s degrees and wrote one of his thesis papers on racial inequity in policing. Until his last days, he read at least two newspapers daily and cut out stories he thought his grandchildren would find interesting—or simply amusing. He initially studied Theology and aspired to be a priest. But he changed course upon meeting his wife, Patricia, with whom he would go on to raise three children with. He loved her dearly as they were nearly perfect complements. Hardly a single day passed where they didn’t make time to have tea and enjoy each other’s company. He loved his children fiercely and took immense interest—and pride—in their lives. Though not a particularly verbose man, he could tell you intimate details about his daughter Eileen’s teaching career in New York’s City’s education system. Likewise, he marveled at his son Tim’s handy-work and ability to problem-solve on the fly. Finally, he so admired his youngest son Ken’s happy-go-lucky attitude and life of service. He served over 20 years in the New York Police Department, achieving the rank of Sergeant without ever firing a gun at anyone. His police shifts often came after days spent as a substitute teacher, working both to support his family. He then worked as a private investigator, focusing largely on work that he felt would help improve the healthcare and eldercare systems. In retirement, after working in these roles, he settled into the one which he loved most, that of a grandfather—or, as he was endearingly known, “Poppy.” This role saw him babysitting, picking up from schools, cooking, teaching all five grandchildren how to drive, and, most critically, always being there when he was needed—no matter the ask. He was the person to whom those who knew him went when they needed their spirits lifted. He was an incomparable listener but always had something clever, insightful, and often quietly hilarious to say. He made everyone feel important and, moreover, that everyone was enough just as they were. He preached enjoying life while we can and not sweating the small things. And for many, he was a key reason their lives were more enjoyable. Tim is missed dearly.
