Eleanor "Joyce" Kemmerling

Eleanor "Joyce" Kemmerling, 100, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2022 at The Good Samaritan Home. Joyce was born in New Harmony, Indiana on September 18, 1921 to the late Mildred (Collins) and Thomas Pote Kemmerling. Joyce was a native of New Harmony and eventually moved to Evansville and graduated from Bosse High School in 1939 as the Salutatorian. She then attended Lockyear Business College. During WWII, Joyce worked as the chief clerk of the downtown office of the rationing board. In 1946, after the war had ended, Joyce was employed by the Vanderburgh County Health Department and retired as finance officer in 1989. Joyce was very independent and drove until she was 95 years old. She enjoyed reading, playing the piano, completing cross word puzzles and telling stories about her childhood. She was a member of the Captain Henry Vanderburgh Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames. Joyce was a woman of great faith and was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Joyce is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Jordan (Charles), son, Thomas P. Dowd (Brenda Goodin) of Evansville, IN; grandchildren, Jason Dowd, Rachel Jordan MD (Tad Renvyle), Sarah C. Jordan (Nicholas Coates), Laura K. Jordan-Smith (Matthew), Erin Dowd Loper (Brad) and Samuel Dowd (Kourtney); great grandchildren, Charles and Ethan Renvyle, Rory and Eliot Coates, Liviana Jordan-Smith, Jaxten Loper and Aubree Loper. Joyce was preceded in death by her son, Charles W. Dowd, III; her parents; and her former husband, Charles W. Dowd, Jr. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, August 5, 2022 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 2301 N. Stockwell Rd., Evansville, IN 47715 with Father Zach Etienne celebrating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit from 8:00 am until Mass time on Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vanderburgh Humane Society, P.O. Box 6711, Evansville, IN 47719 or to Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
