George W. Kiernan

George W. Kiernan, 89, a life long Hastings-on-Hudson resident died peacefully on March 28, 2012. He was born in Hastings to George W. and Ethel Kiernan. George served in the US Army in WW II from 1943 to 1946. He was a First Sergeant in the Technical Service Unit. After the war he returned to Hastings. He joined the Protection Engine Company of the Hastings-on-Hudson Fire Department. George was a 62 year member and an Ex-Captain and Financial Secretary of the Department. George was also a member of the Westchester County Volunteer Fireman's Assoc. and the Southern New York Volunteer Fireman's Assoc. On Feb 9, 1952, George married Elizabeth A. Mark in St. Matthew's Church. They celebrated their 60th wedding Anniversary this year. George worked at Phelps Dodge Co. in Yonkers for 44 years. Surviving are his wife Elizabeth Betty Kiernan, sons George, Gregory Char and daughter Mary Rich Steinitz. George is the devoted grandfather of Alexandra, Victoria, Charles Kiernan, Brianna and Lauren Steinitz. George was predeceased by his brother Vincent and his sister Ruth Braginetz. Mass of the Resurrection Saturday 10:00 AM Church of St. Matthew. Visiting Friday 2-4 & 7-9 PM Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home. Memorials to Hastings-on-Hudson Fire Dept. or Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
