Lillian A. Murphy Obituary

Lillian A. Murphy of Irvington passed away in her 94th year, after a brief illness, September 20. Widow of Irvington Mayor and Postmaster, William A. Murphy. She was born Lillian Evelyn Anderson in New Rochelle, to Sevren Anderson of Joenkoeping, Sweden and Anna Liljedahl Anderson of Halmstad, Sweden. A graduate of New Rochelle High School and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City, she had been employed at the J.C. Turner Lumber Company in Irvington. With the exception of Lubbock Army Flying School in Texas during WWII, she resided in Irvington since 1940. In 1956, she volunteered for some 38 years as an original member of the Phelps Memorial Hospital auxiliary. For over 25 years she was an active member of the Irvington Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the church choir. In 1998 she was awarded Honorary Life Membership by Presbyterian Women USA. Lillian Murphy is survived by her brother Herbert Anderson, by her son William A. Murphy III, by her grandsons William A. Murphy IV and Captain Brian Murphy of the US Army, and granddaughter Jacquelyn Hall, by great-grandchildren Aidan Murphy, Anthony & Brittany DeRenzis and by nieces Sheryl and Galyn Anderson. She was pre-deceased by her son Robert Murphy. The family will be receiving friends at the Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry from 7-9pm today. The funeral will be held at the Irvington Presbyterian Church at 12:30 pm on Thursday, followed by interment in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made in her name to the Irvington Presbyterian Church.
