George Jellinek Dobbs Ferry, New York Obituary

George Jellinek

JELLINEK--George, age 90, of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, died peacefully on January 16, 2010. Born in Budapest, Hungary, Mr Jellinek began studying violin at age five, but his greatest love was opera. A lifelong student of that art, he attended performances throughout Europe and later the United States. He was Musical Director of Station WQXR from 1968 to 1984 and a frequent guest on the Texaco Metropolitan Opera Quiz. His popular syndicated radio program, The Vocal Scene, was heard by listeners coast to coast for 36 years. Mr Jellinek was also a frequent contributer to Opera News, Stereo Review, and other musical publications, and authored several books in the field. He is survived by his beloved wife Hedy, his daughter Nancy Berezin, granddaughter Amy Ford, and great-granddaughter Ava Ford. Private funeral services will be held this week, with a larger memorial service to follow at a later date.

George was as generous in person as he was on air; truly a gifted soul whose contributions both as fellow human being and opera lover will live on in all the hearts he so generously and uniquely filled with joy, knowledge, and insights. Peace,

I am so grateful for the life of George Jellinek, whom I was lucky to know in life as well as on the radio. A wonderful man and husband - and writer. My heartfelt sympathy to Hedy and the rest of the family. Alas, I cannot attend the service.
