Marilyn Weissman age 84 of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY died peacefully on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at the Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff. Born, Marilyn Holme, on December 10, 1925, at Lenox Hill Hospital, in New York City and lived in Riverdale, Bronx, NYC to Joseph and Ethel Holme. In September 1962, Marilyn began her career as a full-time teacher in the Hastings Public School District, where she taught for over twenty years until her retirement in June 1985. She had a passion for teaching, reading, traveling, politics, gardening, music, friends and spending time with her family, particularly enjoying being grandmother to Alex, Evan, Sarah, Rachel, Caitlin and Colin. Marilyn is survived by two sons, Mr. David L. Bassett and wife Gail, of Naperville, IL and the Rev. Bruce W. Bassett, Jr. and wife Suzanne of Allendale, NJ, and her six grandchildren. She was predeceased by her former husband Bruce W. Bassett, Sr. in 2009, her second husband Bernard Weissman in 2000 and her brother Joseph in 1990. Friends may visit the family on Thursday, 3-7 PM at the Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home, edwardsanddowdle.com, 64 Ashford Ave., Dobbs Ferry, NY and on Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home www.vpfh.com , 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff NJ. Funeral Service, Saturday, 9:30 AM at Church of the Epiphany, 55 George Street, Allendale. Interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104, or Hospice of New Jersey, 400 Broadacres Drive, 4th Flr., Bloomfield, NJ 07003, or the American Cancer Society, 20 Mercer Street, Hackensack, NJ 07601.
