John "Jack" Lindner Dobbs Ferry, New York Obituary

John "Jack" Lindner

John "Jack" Lindner sailed into this world as the youngest of three boys born to Anna and Frank Lindner on February, 15th 1932 in the Bronx, New York. After losing his mother at 13 years old, he and his brothers were tenderly cared for by his father's sister, Lucia Comstock. The Lindner boys spent many happy summers boating on City Island at the Morris Yacht Club. At 18, Jack enlisted in the Navy and spent the next four years during the Korean conflict aboard the USS Robert K. Huntington DD-781. After the Navy, Jack returned to New York and worked as an iron worker, helping to erect some of New York's landmark structures such as the Verrazano and George Washington bridges. Spending time sailing on Long Island Sound was the true constant in Jack's life. He raced penguin boats through the New York winters and tried out for the American Olympic sailing team. In 1960 he finally married his lifelong love, Anne Marie Patricia Callahan Lindner. Anne became his "first mate forever." From this union five children were born, John, Mary Pat, Stephen, Lawrence, and Kate. They chose Hastings-On-Hudson, the small town where Jack's mother was born, to raise their family. Jack split his time between work, following his kids to Boy Scout camp, and watching high school sporting events. He made sure all his children knew how to sail and spent countless hours teaching them how to build model airplanes. The Riverview Manor Hose Company 3 was a big part of Jack's life in Hastings. He loved playing cards on the weekend just as much as fighting fires. After Jack suffered a back injury at work, he was forced to change his occupation. He earned his GED at 50, and completed his Associate's Degree in Civil Engineering from Westchester Community College. At the age of 53, Jack started a new career as the Director of Engineering for the Omni Berkshire Hotel in Manhattan. Through all this, Jack continued sailing, participating in weekly races starting from his old stomping grounds, the Morris Yacht Club, and more than once sailing with his three sons and friend, John Petas, in the Around Long Island Regatta. In 1995, Anne and Jack both retired and moved from Hastings-on-Hudson, New York to Lewes, Delaware. Jack purchased a sailboat, the Contender, and spent his summers on the water as well as chatting with other sailors on the docks. He volunteered for years with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, inspecting boats and pitching in when needed. He also satisfied his love of history by becoming a docent at the Lewis Historical Museum and sharing many local stories with museum visitors. Eventually he joined up with the Flying Aces, a model airplane group in Delaware, and really honed his model building skills during the windy winter months. Anne and Jack's house in Lewes hosted an annual family gathering that grew from year to year, ultimately including 9 grandchildren and many family friends. Recently Jack relocated to Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, New York where he could be closer to family. Jack is survived by his children, John Maureen of Hastings on Hudson, NY; Mary Pat Mark Bailey of Fulsear, TX; Stephen Alyssa of Briarcliff Manor, NY; Lawrence Patty of Havertown, PA; and Kate Mike DeGrandpre of Missoula, MT.; his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Margaret, Melissa, Mary Kate, Annie, Patrick, John Patrick, Ella, and Mabel; and his sister-in-law Eileen Raymond Dowd of Lewes, DE. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jack's memory to Riverview Manor Hose Company #3, 83 Euclid Avenue, Hastings on Hudson, NY 10706.

To all the Lindners Jack was a wonderful guy, crazy about Anne and all the family every moment I knew him. He loved talking about his kids exploits at the firehouse and his kids were always at the top of their game. A more helpful neighbor did not exist. May he rest in p... Continue Reading
