Obituary

Hammond, Robert John

On Thursday, July 28, 2022, in his 72nd year, Bob Hammond passed away peacefully at the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital, with his wife by his side, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Bob is deeply loved by his wife of 49 years, Diane (nee Caughie) and their son Mark (Krista). He was predeceased by their infant son Bryan. Granddaughters Ali and Ember will treasure their memories of story time, board games and swimming with their devoted grandpa.

Bob was the eldest of four children, born in Collingwood to parents John and Mae Hammond. He is survived by Thom (Bonnie), Joy Zelasko (Dan, deceased) and Peter. He will be remembered with fondness by his sisters-in-law Sue Beck (Ken, deceased) and Cathy Rouse (Bill) and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Bob attended Victoria Public School, graduated from Collingwood Collegiate, and went on to study optometry at the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry. He was passionate about his chosen profession and practiced for more than 40 years.

If you needed eye care, played hockey, rode a motorcycle, or loved cars old and new, you may have crossed paths with Bob. Acquaintances, colleagues, and friends alike will remember him for his quick wit and dry sense of humour.

As per his wishes cremation has taken place. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. If desired, a donation in Bob’s memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, Collingwood General & Marine Hospital Foundation, or Royal Victoria Hospital Cancer Care Program would be appreciated by the family.
