Stephen W. Hammond Chester, New Jersey Obituary

Stephen W. Hammond

Stephen W. Hammond, 75, of Chester, NJ passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 peacefully at home after a year long battle with cancer. Steve was born on May 24, 1947 in Orange, NJ. He grew up in Maplewood, NJ and attended Columbia High School. Steve was an active member of the New York National Guard during the Vietnam era, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant prior to leaving the Service. He received his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1969, and graduate degree at NJIT in 1975, becoming a Professional Engineer. Steve worked for the County of Morris Engineering Department for 43 years, retiring in 2013 as the County Engineer and Director of Public Works.

Steve continued to serve his community in retirement as a volunteer for Family Promise of Morris County and joined the Board of Trustees in 2015. In 2017, he became the Board President, for which he served through 2021.

It was often joked that Steve "never met a stranger." He was extremely social and loved connecting with people. He enjoyed traveling across the globe and golfing all over NJ and beyond. Steve was passionate about hockey, playing in his younger years, coaching his daughter Kerry's team, and a life-long NJ Devils fan. He was extremely skillful and knowledgeable about home repair and renovation and would travel at the drop of a hat to family members' houses to do any electrical and plumbing work or repair. He was particularly generous in this way. Spending time with his 10 grandchildren brought him tremendous joy and he loved to regale them with his infamous Dad-jokes.

Steve is survived by his wife of 14 years, Edie Boschen, his children, Kerry Hammond and wife, Sarah Kershner (Max, Chloe, and Finn), Ken Hammond and wife, Morgan (Paige and Matthew), his stepchildren, Rob Boschen and wife Lindsey (Kylie, Corbitt, Cayman, and Henry), Jen Boschen and wife, Jewelia Rosenbaum (Fiona), his brother, David, Steve's mother-in-law, Jane Boschen, and his beloved cats, Bonnie and Clyde. Steve is also survived by the mother of his children, Kristin Hammond. He was predeceased by his parents, Emil and Anne.

Steve's Life Celebration will be held privately by his family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Family Promise of Morris County at https://www.familypromisemorris.org/ or Hockey Fights Cancer https://www.nhl.com/community/hockey-fights-cancer .

Steve was a wonderful caring, giving man. I was lucky to have crossed paths with such a nice guy. He treated everyone like he knew them forever. He will certainly be missed. When daddy passed someone sent me this poem and really liked it. I hope you do too.
